Indian women’s hockey team wins FIH Series Finals

Indian Women’s Hockey team has won the FIH Women’s Series Finals Hiroshima 2019 after defeating hosts Japan 3-1 in the Final held at the Hiroshima Hockey Stadium. The Indian women eked put a hard fought win over the Asian champions.

Captain Rani Rampal gave India the lead in the 3rd minute before drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur struck twice (45th and 60th minutes) late in the match to set up the win. Kanon Mori scored the lone goal for Japan in the 11th minute. The World No. 9 Indian team had already qualified for the FIH Olympic Qualifiers 2019 on Saturday after securing a place in the Final of the competition.

Hockey:

  • The India national field hockey team was the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation.
  • In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal and until 1960, the Indian men’s team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, winning six gold medals in a row.
  • The team had a 30–0 winning streak during this time, from their first game until losing in the 1960 gold medal final.
  • India also won the 1975 World Cup. India’s hockey team is the most successful team ever in the Olympics, having won eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
