When he was 16 year old, his horoscope(kundli) predicted that he will die on 4th day of his marriage as snake will bite him. So, when he got married, On that particular day,  his wife stayed awake the whole night and laid all her ornaments on at the entrance of sleeping chamber, lit up the lamps all over the place and narrated the story whole night.

When Yamdoot (the god of death) arrived in the form of snake. His eyes were dazzled by the shining of lamps and jewellery due to which he sat at the entrance whole night listening stories and went away silently next day. Thus, the young prince was saved from the clutches of death by the cleverness of his new bride, and the day came to be celebrated as Dhanteras.
