  • A 72-member team of City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, will leave for the United States for a live performance at the United Nations Headquarters on June 21.

CABINET APPROVALS

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) and Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) for export credit of USD 9 billion for infrastructural development in India.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval to the Agreement between India and Cyprus on Merchant Shipping, which was signed in April 2017.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Securities and Exchange Organization (SEO), Iran in relation to mutual cooperation on matters pertaining to securities markets.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India and Direction Nationale De Industries (MLINDI), Republic of Mali on Standardization and Conformity Assessment.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing and subsequent ratification of the Agreement on Transfer of sentenced persons between Indi and Somalia.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) in relation to Mutual Co-operation.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the initial public offer (IPO) of Indian Renewable Development Agency (IREDA) to issue 13.9 crore fresh equity shares of Rs 10 each to the public on a book-building basis.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Interest Subvention Scheme (ISS) for farmers for the year 2017-18. This will help farmers getting short term crop loan up to Rs. 3 lakh payable within one year at only 4% per annum.
  • The Union Cabinet chaired has given its ex-post facto approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture in the State of Palestine on agriculture cooperation.
  • The Union has approved the proposal to introduce a Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill, 2017. The Bill would provide for a comprehensive resolution framework for specified financial sector entities to deal with bankruptcy situation in banks, insurance companies and financial sector entities.
  • The Union Cabinet was apprised about an Memorandum of Understanding which has already been signed between India and Bangladesh for promoting cooperation in the field of Information Technology and Electronics (IT&E).

BANKING AND FINANCE

  • Global software major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched “BaNCS App Development Kit” (ADK) that will enable banks to fast design and build their own apps and deploy it across devices and desktops seamlessly.
  • Canara Bank and the New India Assurance Company have entered into a corporate agency arrangement for distribution of insurance products.

FOREIGN RELATIONS

  • The Human Resource Development department of Sikkim government has signed an MoU with the British Council to enhance quality of education in the state.
  • Navies of India and Australia will participate in bilateral maritime exercise AUSINDEX-17 this week with an aim to enhancing interoperability and cooperation between the two forces.
  • India to be a co-partner in a global food and beverages trade ANUGA held in Cologne Germany from October 7-11 this year.
  • Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who is leading a Parliamentary delegation to Mauritius, met the Speaker of National Assembly of Mauritius, Santi Bai Hanoomanjee in Port Louis, and inked a MoU to institutionalise cooperation between the two Parliaments.
  • India and Pakistan have became full members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a China-dominated security grouping that is increasingly seen as a counterweight to NATO.
  • India and the UN Office for South-South Cooperation have launched a partnership fund that will support sustainable development projects across the developing world.
  • India has signed the OECD multilateral convention that aims to check cross-border tax evasion by multinational companies.
  • India has ratified two key ILO conventions on child labour, according to a statement issued by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

  • French President Emmanuel Macron has launched a website aimed at attracting researchers, entrepreneurs and others to France to pursue efforts to combat climate change.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has divided the drugs into three categories — access, watch and reserve — specifying which are to be used for common ailments and which are to be kept for complicated diseases.
  • France and the European Union have extended a grant of 3.5 million euros under the ‘Moblise Your City’ (MYC) initiative.
  • Hungary’s parliament approved a crackdown on foreign-backed civil society groups despite an international outcry, in a move seen as targeting US billionaire George Soros.
  • China flicked the switch on the world’s largest floating solar energy plant. The massive waterborne plant is expected to generate 40 megawatts at one time and could supply electricity for over 15,000 homes.
  • Israel has greenlighted plans for over 8,000 new homes in the West Bank, with over a third for “immediate” construction, the defense minister revealed making it the largest expansion of Jewish settlements in the area in 25 years.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

  • S. Space Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), has chosen 12 new astronauts, including an Indian-American, Col Raja “Grinder” Chari.
  • India’s largest IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will collaborate with chipmaker Intel to design a reference architecture that could be used for rolling out Internet of things (IoT), cloud, 5G and AI by its customers.
  • Indian Naval Ship Sahyadri is on an overseas deployment to the South East Asia and Southern Indian Ocean.
