1. Pune to get India’s deepest underground metro station

The underground metro station coming up at Pune’s Civil Court will be the deepest metro station in India, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation’s MD said.

  • The station will be 33.1 metres deep (108.59 feet) and will have its roof at a height of 95 feet. According to reports, the metro station will be operational by the end of March this year.

2. Which are the world’s 10 most valuable brands?

Amazon has beaten Apple to become the world’s most valuable brand with a brand value of $299.3 billion, Brand Finance reported.

Apple was ranked as the world’s second most valuable brand, followed by Google, Microsoft, Walmart, Samsung, ICBC, Verizon, Tesla and TikTok. Tata Group, ranked 69th, is the only Indian company to feature among the top 100 most valuable brands.

3. Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank Limited Awarded with the Best Bank Award

Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank Limited (TMB) has bagged the Best Small Bank award in the Best Banks survey for the year 2022. The Best Banks survey was conducted by Business Today- KPMG (BT-KPMG Best Banks Survey).

The bank has won the Best Small Bank Award under the category of banks with a book size of less than Rs 1 Lakh crore.

4. New Zealand’s PM Jacinda Ardern announces resignation

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, a global figurehead of progressive politics, shocked the country.

She was re-elected for a second term in 2020, the victory buoyed by her government’s “go hard and go early” approach to the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw New Zealand impose some of the world’s strictest border rules, separating families and shutting out almost all foreigners for almost two years.

Ardern won international acclaim for her empathetic handling of the 2019 Christchurch mosque massacre, in which 51 Muslim worshippers were killed and another 40 wounded.

5. United States Sri Lanka CARAT or MAREX-2023

Sri Lanka and the United States are to conduct week-long joint military exercises in January 2023 to prepare for disaster relief and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, amid China’s increasing military manoeuvres in the strategic region.

The exercise, named Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT)/Marine Exercise (MAREX) Sri Lanka 2023, will involve participants from the Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Maldives National Defence Force.

6. India’s first 3x platform wind turbine generators (WTG) installed in Karnataka

In Gadag, Karnataka, ReNew Power erected India’s first 3x platform wind turbine generators (WTGs).

  • The new wind turbine generators will be used in the country’s first “Round the Clock” renewable energy project, which will combine wind, solar, and battery energy storage technology (BESS).
  • This project will generate enough energy to power over 1 million Indian households annually.

7. Shubman Gill, youngest batsman to hit double centuries in one-day international cricket

  • Shubman Gill joined the prestigious list on January 18, 2023, becoming the fifth Indian batsman to score 200 in the 50-over format, only one month after Ishan Kishan hammered a double century in an ODI.
  • He cleared the ropes nine times in total and finished with 208 off just 149 deliveries.
  • Shubman is also the youngest batsman to achieve the milestone.

8. SEBI Proposes Blocking of Funds Facility

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) releases consultation paper proposing to introduce a blocking of funds facility for trading in secondary markets. Aimed at protecting investors’ money from misuse and default by stock brokers.

SEBI seeks comments from market participants until February 16 on operational challenges on the proposed concept, associated processes, transaction flow, and risk management.

9. Vedanta’s Cairn Oil & Gas appoints Nick Walker as new CEO

Cairn Oil & Gas, owned by Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta, announced Nick Walker’s appointment as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In his previous stint, Walker was President and CEO at Lundin Energy.

  • Walker will be the sixth CEO of the company since Vedanta bought the company from Cairn Energy PLC, now known as Capricorn Energy PLC, in 2011.
