1. World Wetlands Day, 2023

To create awareness about the importance of wetlands and protect them from degrading, the UN and other international organizations celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 02.

  • They account for 4.7% of the Indian Geographical area.
  • Today 30% of the Indian wetlands have been lost.
  • And 35% of wetlands have been lost at the world level.

2. Morgan Stanley names Arun Kohli new country head for India

Morgan Stanley named Arun Kohli as the new India head to replace Sanjay Shah, a veteran of 26 years at the firm, who is retiring. Kohli, currently the chief operating officer for EMEA, will head the US bank’s business in the country, according to a memo seen by Bloomberg News.

With the bank since 2007, Kohli will relocate to Mumbai from London where he headed the firm’s post-Brexit strategy and implemented growth strategies across markets in the region.

3. Equatorial Guinea appoints Manuela Roka Botey as first female PM

Equatorial Guinea has appointed Manuela Roka Botey as prime minister. She became the first woman in the country to hold the position. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled the country since 1979, made the announcement in a decree read on state television.

Ms Rotey was previously the education minister and joined the government in 2020. She replaces former premier Francisco Pascual Obama Asue, who has been in the position since 2016.

4. V Ramachandra appointed by RBI as member of Advisory Committee of SIFL, SEFL

V Ramachandra, a former chief general officer of Canara Bank, was appointed by the Reserve Bank on Tuesday to the advisory committees of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited (SIFL) and Srei Equipment Finance Limited (SEFL).

5. Puma India named Indian Captain Harmanpreet Kaur as its brand ambassador

Sports brand Puma India announced roping in women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur as its latest brand ambassador. As part of the partnership terms, Harmanpreet will endorse the brand’s footwear, apparel and accessories throughout the year.

With this, Harmanpreet joins PUMA’s roster of brand ambassadors that include Virat Kohli, football stars Neymar Jr and Sunil Chhetri, boxer MC Mary Kom, cricketer Harleen Deol and Para-Shooter Avani Lekhara.

6. IIRF releases MBA Ranking 2023, IIM Ahmedabad, Bengaluru in top 3

According to the latest Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) ranking (2023), the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), is the top government college in India for pursuing the Master of Business Administration (MBA) course. IIM Bengaluru (Karnataka) and IIM Kolkata (West Bengal) are ranked second and third, respectively, after IIM Ahmedabad.

7. E – Waste (Management) Amendment Rules, 2023

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change released the E-Waste Management Rules in 2022.

  • It is expected to come into effect in 2023.
  • CPCB was appointed as the regulatory body to implement the rules.
  • The rules target companies in the consumer goods field. Recently the ministry amended some of the rules.

8. NAMASTE (National Action Plan for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) scheme

  • In the Union Budget 2023, the Government of India allocated Rs 100 crores for the NAMASTE scheme.
  • With this, the GoI aims to mechanize septic tank cleaning and sewer cleaning in towns and cities.
  • The scheme aims to provide an alternate livelihood to sanitation workers.
  • In addition, NAMASTE will strive to bring behavioral changes to them.

9. Adani Group Enters Israel with Haifa Port Acquisition For 1.2 Billion $

The Adani Group acquired the strategic Israeli port of Haifa for USD 1.2 billion and vowed to transform the skyline of this Mediterranean city as part of its decision to invest more in the Jewish nation, including opening an artificial intelligence lab in Tel Aviv.

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, whose business empire was rocked by allegations of fraud by US short seller Hindenburg Research, appeared alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for signing of the deal to takeover Haifa Port, and spoke of investment opportunities.
