  1. Rajat Sharma Elected President of News Broadcasters Association

News Broadcasters Association (NBA), a representative body of private television news channels, elected Rajat Sharma as president at its 10th annual general meeting.

Sharma is chairman and editor-in-chief of India TV.This will be Sharma’s third stint as NBA president.

He was followed by Ashok Venkatramani, former chief executive officer of ABP News Network Pvt Ltd, who stepped down in September 2016.

The Board of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organisation for allretail payment systems in the country, announced theunanimous appointment of B Sambamurthy as interim Chairman of the Board.

He has been the Nominee Director from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the board of NPCI since December 5, 2013

  1. Brazil’s First Female Attorney General Takes Charge

For the first time in Brazil’s history, Raquel Dodge, a female took over prosecutor-general’s post, replacing Rodrigo Janot, who held the position for four years.

In a ceremony in Brasilia with the presence of President Michel Temer and Supreme Court (STF) President Carmen Lucia, Raquel Dodge was sworn in as the new prosecutor-general.

  1. Tata Steel, TERI launch ‘Green School Project’ in Odisha

Tata Steel has in association with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) launched an initiative to create awareness about environment issues in school campuses in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

They started the first series of workshops for the students at their Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) in Jajpur under the “Green School Project”.

 The workshop will run till September 23 in all identified schools across raw material locations of Tata Steel.

A new project of the Department of Biotechnology aims at starting a ‘lab on boat’ on Bramhaputra river for biological analysis of the river system.

The ambitious project also proposes to have multiple mobile laboratories on the river and its tributaries along with providing access to local research institution

  1. Udaan extended till Dec 2018 for Jammu and Kashmir
The Union Cabinet has extended the time period for Udaan – the Special Industry Initiative (SII) for Jammu and Kashmir till 31 December 2018.
 
Udaan is a centrally funded skill enhancement scheme for J&K youth implemented by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). 
 
It is a special initiative to address the needs of the educated unemployed in the state who are graduate, post graduate and three year diploma engineers.

The Union Cabinet has approved the revamped Khelo India programme at a cost of Rs.1,756 crore for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20. T

his marks a watershed moment in the history of Indian sports, as the Programme aims at mainstreaming sport as a tool for individual development, community development, economic development and national development.

The revamped Khelo India Programme would impact the entire sports ecosystem, including infrastructure, community sports, talent identification, coaching for excellence, competition structure and sports economy.

The territorial administration of Pudhucherry will once again try to impose a ban on manufacture and use of plastic bags below 51 microns.

Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy, who also holds the portfolio of Science, Technology and Environment, said after taking into account the environmental hazard caused by plastic, the government has decided to ban plastic below 51 microns.

  1. India joins quantum computing race

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is planning to fund a project to develop quantum computers.

A quantum computer, still largely a theoretical entity, employs the principles of quantum mechanics to store information in ‘qubits’ instead of the typical ‘bits’ of 1 and 0.

Qubits work faster because of the way such circuits are designed, and their promise is that they can do intensive number-crunching tasks much more efficiently than the fastest comparable computers.

Fifty countries have signed a treaty to ban nuclear weapons, a pact that the world’s nuclear powers spurned but supporters hailed as a historic agreement nonetheless.

This treaty is an important step towards the universally held goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.

Under its terms, non-nuclear nations agreed not to pursue nukes in exchange for a commitment by the five original nuclear powers the U.S., Russia, Britain, France and China to move toward nuclear disarmament and to guarantee other states’ access to peaceful nuclear technology for producing energy.

  1. Google Buys Pixel Phone Division from HTC in $1.1 Billion Deal

Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google said it would pay $1.1 billion for the division at Taiwan’s HTC Corp (2498.TW) that develops the U.S. firm’s Pixel smartphones.

Google’s strategy of licensing Android for free and profiting from embedded services such as search and maps has made Android the dominant mobile operating system with some 89 percent of the global market.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme for 2017 is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.”

The theme honours the spirit of TOGETHER, a global initiative that promotes respect, safety and dignity for everyone forced to flee their homes and those leaving in search of a better life.

  1. China launches world’s fastest bullet train

China has restored the maximum speed of bullet trains on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway line to 350 kilometres per hour, making it the fastest commercially run train, six years after it reduced the speed due to a fatal accident.

The speed was reduced to 300 kilometres per hour following the deadly accident in July 2011 that killed 40 people.

Ana Carrasco became the first woman to win an individual world championship motorcycle race in Portugal.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, riding a Kawasaki Ninja 300, found a draft on the final stretch to overtake Yamaha riders Alfonoso Coppola (by 0.053sec) and Marc García (0.062) in round 10 of the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship.

Bollywood actor Shakila, known for her work in films like Aar Paar and CID, died at at her residence here after a heart attack. She was 82.
