1. Japan provides Rs 3,500 crores assistance to India to fight COVID-19

The Japanese Government announced that it will provide loan assistance of Rs 3,500 crores to India as a response to COVID-19 crisis. This will also include implementation of health and medical policy. The loan is being received by India as an emergency fund.

The loan agreement was signed by Japan International Cooperation Agency in New Delhi. It has an interest of 0.01% per annum along with a redemption period of 15 years.

2. India develops World’s Largest Solar Tree

The CSIR-CMERI operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology has developed world largest solar tree. The tree has an annual capacity of generating 12,000 to 14,000 units of Clean and Green power.

3.Ministry of Defence signs Rs 2,580 crores of contracts to boost Make in India

The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth Rs 2,580 crores to boost Make in India. The contracts were signed for supply of six Pinaka Regiments to the Indian Army.

What is Pinaka?

Pinaka is a multiple rocket launcher that was designed and developed by DRDO. It has maximum range of 40 km for Mark-I and 75 km for Mark II. Pinaka was used in Kargil war and was successful in neutralising enemy positions.

4. China builds missile site in Kailash-Mansarovar

Amidst border tensions between India and China, China has reportedly built a missile launch site in Kailash-Mansarovar. The Kailash-Mansarovar is revered by four religions and is linked to high spiritual scriptures in India.

The region is also the origin of four transnational rivers namely Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali.

5. India, Japan, Australia agree to launch a resilient supply chain initiative in the Indo-Pacific region

Australia-India-Japan Economic Ministers’ Joint Statement on Supply Chain Resilience was held on 1st September. The virtual meeting comprised of India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Senator Simon, and Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Kajiyama Hiroshi.

India-Japan-Australia has agreed to launch an initiative to build a resilient supply chain in the Indo-Pacific region.

The aim is to create a free and transparent trade & investment environment.

6. ICICI Prudential Life launched voice chatbot “LiGo” on Google Assistant

ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited has introduced an Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered voice chatbot, “LiGo”, on Google Assistant. This will enable the company’s policyholders to address their queries by simple voice commands. It provides an easy to use and convenient service touch-point for customers.

The assistance is available in ‘Indian English’ and supports 9 Indian Languages.

7. Hemant Khatri becomes new CMD of Hindustan Shipyard Limited

Commodore, Hemant Khatri (Retd) has assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of state-owned defence shipbuilder, Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. He will replace Rear Admiral L V Sarat Babu (Retd). Previously, Hemant Khatri was serving as the Director of Strategic Projects HSL.

9. India’s 1st female cardiologist Dr S. Padmavati passes away

Noted cardiologist, Dr S Padmavati passed away at the age of 103 years due to COVID-19. She was the first female cardiologist of India and was popularly known as ”God Mother of Cardiology”. She was the founder of the National Heart Institute. She was born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1917, a year before the world was hit by the Spanish Flu pandemic.

10. Aveek Sarkar becomes new Chairman of Press Trust of India

The Editor Emeritus and Vice Chairman of the Ananda Bazar Group of Publications, Aveek Sarkar has been elected as the chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI). He succeeds Vijay Kumar Chopra, Chief Editor of the Punjab Kesari Group of newspapers.

12. Cabinet approves Mission Karmayogi: What is Mission Karmayogi

Union Cabinet approved Mission Karmayogi for Civil Services Capacity Building during its meeting on September 2, 2020. This was announced during the media briefing on cabinet decisions by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.

Mission Karmayogi is a national programme for civil services capacity building to lay the foundation for the capacity building for civil servants so that they remain entrenched in Indian culture while learning from best practices across the world.

Indian renewable energy company, Adani Green has been ranked as the world’s number 1 solar energy company in terms of capacity. The company is currently the world’s top solar developer with around 2.3 GW of operational projects.

14. Sunil Nagpal becomes first Indian to enter the second round of Grand Slam Singles event

Sunil Nagpal on September 1, 2020, created history by becoming the first Indian to win a singles’ main draw match at a grand slam in the last 7 years. The 23 years old successfully stormed into the second round of the ongoing US Open.

15. Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee dies at 84

Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee passed away on August 31, 2020, after testing positive for COVID-19. The Veteran Congressman had undergone emergency surgery to remove a brain clot on August 10 after testing positive.

16. Union Cabinet approves introduction of J&K Official Languages Bill in Parliament

Union Cabinet has approved the Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Bill, 2020 to be introduced in Parliament, to make Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi and English as official languages for the Union Territory, announced Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday. The Union Minister said that this was done on the demand of the people.
