1. UNHRC: India re-elected to UN Human Rights Council for record 6th term with overwhelming majority

India on October 14, 2021, was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2022-2024 term with an overwhelming majority in the General Assembly.

India’s re-election for the record sixth term to the UN body has been described by New Delhi’s envoy as a robust endorsement of the country’s strong roots in pluralism, democracy, and fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

2. 2021 Global Hunger Index

The 2021 Global Hunger Index (GHI) ranked India at 101st out of a total of 116 countries. The 2021 GHI report launched on October 14, 2021, stated that India with a score of 27.5 is facing a level of hunger that is serious.

The Global Hunger Index released in 2020 ranked India at 94th among 107 countries. India has also been identified among the 31 countries where hunger has been identified as a serious threat. India has also ranked behind Pakistan (92nd rank), Bangladesh (76th rank), and Nepal (76th rank).

3. India’s first ‘One Health’ Consortium launched

Dr. Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology on October 14, 2021, virtually launched India’s first ‘One Health’ Consortium.

The newly launched consortium envisages carrying out the surveillance of important viral, bacterial and parasitic infections of the zoonotic as well as the transboundary pathogens.

4. 17th Edition of Indo-US Joint Military Exercise “Ex Yudh Abhyas 2021

The 17th edition of the Joint Military Training Exercise “Ex Yudh Abhyas 2021” between the Indian Army and the United States Army, is scheduled to take place from October 15 to 29, 2021 at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska in USA. The Indian contingent will comprise of 350 personnel of an Infantry Battalion Group.

5. Microsoft team wins 2021 C.K. Prahalad Award

Indian American Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella has won the prestigious C K Prahlad award for Global Business Sustainability Leadership for the year 2021, along with three other top leaders of Microsoft. The four top Microsoft leaders have received the Award for their collaborative leadership to transform Microsoft into a carbon negative company by 2030 and remove all its historical emissions by 2050.

6. World Student’s Day 2021: 15 October

World Student’s Day is celebrated every year on October 15. The day is celebrated in honour of the birth anniversary of the former president of India, Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Since 2010, the United Nations Organisation (UNO) has marked October 15 as World Student’s Day in an attempt to acknowledge the efforts of Dr Kalam toward education and his students.

The current year’s (2021) theme of World Students’ Day is “Learning for people, planet, prosperity and peace“.

7. International Day of Rural Women: 15 October

The International Day of Rural Women is observed globally on 15 October each year. The day recognizes the crucial role of women and girls in ensuring the sustainability of rural households and communities, improving rural livelihoods and overall well-being. In India, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare observes the day as the Rashtriya Mahila Kisan Diwas since 2016, to increase the active participation of women in agriculture.

8. India to pilot 1000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Central Government has given its approval to invite the expression of interest for installation of pilot 1000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project.

This pilot project is the joint effort of “Ministry of New & Renewable energy” and Ministry of Power. Both the ministries have been working on this in order to provide a road map for installation of energy storage system in India.

9. China sets up $233 million Kunming Biodiversity fund

China pledged to inject $233 million into a new fund called “Kunming Biodiversity Fund” for the protection of biodiversity in developing countries, recently. This decision was taken during a key UN conservation summit, even though major donors disagreed on it.

China pledged as it the world’s biggest polluter and seeks to play a prominent role internationally on biodiversity conservation.
