  1. Renowned Hindi writer Krishna Sobti chosen for 53rd Jnanpith Award

Renowned Hindi littérateur Krishna Sobti has been chosen for this year’s Jnanpith Award, the Jnanpith Selection Board announced.

The Jnanpith Selection Board has announced the recipient of the 53rd Jnanpith Award for the year 2017.

Sobti, 92, is known for experimenting with new writing styles and creating “bold” and “daring” characters in her stories who were ready to accept all challenges. Her language is highly influenced by the intermingling of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi cultures.

  1. Shamika Ravi to be appointed as part-time member of PM economic panel

Shamika Ravi, a senior fellow at Brookings India, would be appointed as part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).

Headed by NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy, the EAC-PM includes NITI Aayog’s Principal Advisor Ratan Watal as its member and economists Surjit Bhalla, Rathin Roy and Ashima Goyal as part-time members.

Ravi leads the development economics research vertical at Brookings India. Ravi is also a visiting professor of economics at the Indian School of Business (ISB) where she teaches courses in Game Theory and Microfinance.

  1. Mary Kom named Youth World Championships ambassador

Five-time world champion M C Mary Kom was  named ambassador of the AIBA Women’s Youth World Championships to be held in Guwahati from November 19 to 26.

Besides five world titles, Mary Kom also has an Olympic bronze medal to her credit.

  1. Allahabad to Get India’s First Black Buck Conservation Reserve

Uttar Pradesh cabinet has decided to make India’s first conservation reserve for black buck in Allahabad’s Meja.

Among the five major decisions taken in the cabinet meeting, the black buck conservation reserve in Meja Forest Division of Allahabad is seen as the most important one.

It is believed that the decision taken for protection of black deer will also help in wooing tourists.

  1. Sonowal launches 647 schemes for development of Majuli

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal  has rolled out 647 schemes entailing an investment of Rs 24.57 crore for development of the world’s largest river island Majuli.

In a move to bolster development of the river island Majuli, Sonowal launched 647 schemes under MGNREGA and 14th Finance Commission to be implemented with a financial outlay of Rs 24.57 crore.

  1. Kerala road accident victims to get free aid for 1st 48 hrs

The Kerala government has decided to formulate a trauma-care scheme in the State wherein all emergency care and treatment will be provided to accident victims free-of-cost for the first 48 hours once the person has been admitted to a hospital.

The government will pay for the emergency care expenses incurred by a hospital for an accident victim for the first 48 hours, which would be recouped from insurance companies later.

  1. Indian Air Force, DRDO successfully test-fire ‘Glide’ bomb

The Indian Air Force, along with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested an indigenously developed light weight ‘Glide’ bomb in Chandipur in Odisha. With this DRDO announced that this bomb will soon be inducted into the armed forces.

Named SAAW (Smart Anti Airfield Weapon), it was dropped from an IAF aircraft at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur.

SAAW is developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), along with other laboratories of the DRDO and the Indian Air Force.

  1. Karnataka focus state at World Food India 2017 trade fair in Delhi

Karnataka will be the focus State in the three-day ‘World Food India 2017’ trade fair being held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

The three-day World Food India event inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a special State session for Karnataka at Vigyan Bhavan.

The Karnataka delegation is led by Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda with Large and Medium Industries Minister R V Deshpande as the guest of honour.

  1. AP signs pact with German Agribiz Alliance

Singapore Amaravati Investment Holdings Pvt Ltd (SAIH), a joint venture company comprising Ascendas-Singbridge and Sembcorp Development, the German Agribusiness Alliance at German Asia-Pacific Business Association (OAV), and the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi to establish a task force to support Andhra Pradesh in its development of food and agriculture sectors.

Strategies, policies and plans would be formulated to enable collaboration among private and public participants in Andhra Pradesh, Germany and Singapore for the promotion of technology, trade, business co-operation and investments in the food and agriculture sectors.

ONGC has received the Information Memorandum from the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management for acquiring majority stake in fellow public sector undertaking HPCL.

The Cabinet approval for the merger came around July, and then we went to our board and took the in-principle approval in the third week of August.

The Indian Air Force, along with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested an indigenously developed light weight ‘Glide’ bomb in Chandipur in Odisha. With this DRDO announced that this bomb will soon be inducted into the armed forces.

Named SAAW (Smart Anti Airfield Weapon), it was dropped from an IAF aircraft at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur. Reportedly, a total of three tests with “different release conditions” and ranges were conducted and were all successful.

  1. India tops domestic air passenger traffic in September, China second: IATA

India’s domestic passenger traffic was the highest among major aviation markets at 15.5 per cent in September, followed by China and the Russian Federation.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), in its global passenger traffic data, revealed that India’s domestic demand — revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) — was the highest among major aviation markets like Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Russia and the US.

  1. India to be high middle income economy by 2047: World Bank CEO

Days after it gave India a 30 place jump in its ease of doing business ranking, the World Bank has said the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and reforms push by the government will catapult the country to high middle income economy in 30 years.

It credited India’s “extraordinary” achievement of quadrupling of per capita income to reforms taken in last three decades.

Comparing the achievement of securing 100th rank in the latest Doing Business Report to hitting century in cricket parlance, World Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kristalina Georgieva said a jump of that nature is very rare since the beginning of the survey 15 year ago.

  1. Asia tops in news coverage, trails in research

According to a new study published in the scientific journal The Lancet, while most news articles on the impact of climate change on health are published in Asia, more than half the research, however, continues to focus, primarily, on the impact felt in Europe and America.

The Lancet paper notes that in just the last decade, a marked increase has been seen in the number of published research linking health and climate change — from 94 reports in 2007 to over 275 in both 2015 and 2016.

Asian countries, including India, and particularly the island nations in South-East Asia, are seen to be facing the biggest threat from the impact of climate change, particularly global warming, resulting in higher interest — political as well as social.

  1. Yes Bank signs MoU with government for financing Rs 1,000 crore

Private sector lender Yes Bank has signed an agreement with the government to provide Rs 1,000 crore financing for food processing projects.

The funding will be provided to around 100 food processing projects with an average ticket size of Rs 10 crore each.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was amid the ongoing three-day World Food India being organized by the Food Processing Ministry.

  1. AU Small Finance Bank gets RBI nod for Scheduled Commercial Bank

AU Small Finance Bank has received Reserved Bank of India (RBI) approval to operate as Scheduled Commercial Bank. This bank’s name has now been included in the Second Schedule of Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

Post acquiring scheduled commercial bank status, AU Small Finance Bank will be able to do borrowing and lending with RBI under Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF).

  1. 7th Asia Ministerial Energy Roundtable held in Bangkok

The Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan will be on an official visit to Bangkok, Thailand from 01-02nd November 2017 to participate in the IEF 7thAsian Ministerial Energy Roundtable (AMER7).

India is the current chair of International Energy Forum (IEF) which is promoting the AMER – a biennial event bringing together Energy Ministers and experts from Asian countries.

  1. South Korea-India friendship festival to be held from Nov 8

To promote cultural ties between the cities of Seoul and the Delhi/NCR, the first-ever Seoul- India Friendship Festival will be held at Cyber Hub, Gurugram from November 8.

Organised by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the two- day festival will showcase various aspects of the South Korean capital’s art, culture and entertainment.

The festival is aimed at establishing a deep cultural connect and understanding between the two countries. The festival will facilitate cultural exchange between Delhi and Seoul in an entertaining and interactive manner.

  1. Lebanese prime minister resigns

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has resigned from his post during a trip to Saudi Arabia in a surprise move that plunged the country into uncertainty amid heightened regional tensions.

Hariri was appointed prime minister in late 2016 and headed a 30-member national unity cabinet that included the Shiite militant Hezbollah. The government has largely succeeded in protecting the country from the effects of the civil war in neighboring Syria.

  1. Gagan Narang wins silver at Commonwealth Shooting C’ships

Olympic bronze-medallist Gagan Narang won a silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle prone event of the Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Gold Coast.

Annu Raj Singh, who also made a comeback in the Indian team, had a good outing as she cruised her way to win the bronze medal in the women’s 50m pistol competition.

The 2010 CWG gold medallist shot a total of 28 in the finals to finish third.

  1. Shahzar Rizvi, Pooja Ghatkar win gold at Commonwealth Shooting Championship

Indian pistol shooters have pulled off a clean sweep in the 10m air pistol event at the Commonwealth Shooting Championship with Shahzar Rizvi, Omkar Singh and Jitu Rai winning gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.

In the 10m women’s air rifle event, Pooja Ghatkar bagged a gold while her countrymate Anjum Moudgil won the silver medal. The bronze in this event went to Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore.

  1. India’s Sharath Kamal & Sathiyan bag bronze in Belgium Open

India’s Achanta Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan won a bronze medal each at the prestigious 2017 Challenge Belgium Open Table Tennis tournament in De Haan (Belgium).

They lost their semifinals to the second-seeded German of Patrick Franziska and Ricardo Walther respectively by identical 2-3 margin to settle for a bronze

  1. Aditi wins in Abu Dhabi for her third LET title

Young Indian golfer Aditi Ashok made a triumphant return to the Ladies European Tour by clinching the Fatima Bin Mubarak Ladies Open after surviving a few anxious moments in the closing stages.

The 19-year-old sounded a warning to her competitors ahead of the Hero Indian Open. It is Aditi s third LET win in less than 12 months.
