1. Sumant Kathpalia to be MD, CEO of IndusInd Bank

Sumant Kathpalia has been selected by the private sector lender IndusInd Bank as the new MD & CEO of the bank. Kathpalia is currently serving as the head of consumer loans at the Hindujas-promoted lender.

Kathpalia will succeed Romesh Sobti, the current MD & CEO of the bank. Sobti will be retiring in March 2020. He will be appointed after the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). His name has been forwarded to RBI for approval.

2. International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed on 2 November

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed on 2 November 2019. The day aims to make every individual and country to reaffirm their attachment to the safety of journalists. It also aims to promote press freedom across the world.

3. Lt Gen Anup Banerji took charge as Director General of DG AFMS

Lt Gen Anup Banerji took charge as Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DG AFMS), on 1 November 2019. He will replace Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Unni. Unni was appointed in the year 2018.

Anup Banerji is an alumnus of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. He is an outstanding cardiologist and an exceptional administrator. He held various important clinical and staff positions including Head of the Department of Medicine and Cardiology at MH CTC Pune and Army Hospital R&R, Consultant (Medicine and Cardiology) at CH (EC), MG (Med) MG & G Area, Comdt AMC Centre, and College Lucknow and DGMS (Navy).

4. State Formation Day celebrated by Several States

Seven Indian States namely Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh celebrated their formation day in November 1, 2019. PM Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind and several other leaders wished the states for their prosperity.

The day is celebrated as “Rajyotsav” by the state of Karnataka every year. There are 28 states and 9 Union Territories in India as on November 2, 2019.

5. Mumbai-now a member of UNESCO Creative Cities Network

On October 30, 2019, 66 cities were designated by UNESCO as Creative Cities. The cities are named creative based on their mission to place creativity and creative economy at the core of their urban development to make their city safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goal

From India, Hyderabad and Mumbai were included in the list of Creative Cities this year. They were announced on World Cities Day. Till now the following cities were included in the list for the respective categories

Varanasi-Music
Chennai-Music
Jaipur-Crafts and Folk art

6. Dustlik 2019: India Uzbekistan joint Military Exercise

India will conduct its first ever military exercise with Uzbekistan in a 10-day session on counter terrorism tactics. The exercise will be held at Chirchiq Training Area, Uzbekistan between November 4 and November 13, 2019. The Defence Minister Shri Raj Nath Singh during his 3 day visit met the Indian contingent participating in the joint exercise.

7. Santosh Gangwar Launches 3 Apps: Uan Registration, E-Inspection and DIGI Locker

Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Minister of State (I/C) for Labour and Employment launched 3 Apps: UAN REGISTRATION, E-INSPECTION AND DIGI LOCKE, developed by Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) at its 67th Foundation Day here today. Speaking on the occasion Shri Gangwar said that these Apps will immensely enhance the Ease of Doing Business and promote transparency in the working in the EPFO.

8. Kolkata International Film Festival to start on November 8

The Kolkata International Film Festival will start on November 8. Satyajit Ray directed Gupi Gayen, Bhagha Bayen will be the inaugural film of this festival. Cine Super-star Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and a galaxy of Bollywood and Tollywood stars will be present at the inaugural programme of the festival.

9. Joint statement of 7th INDIA – US Economic and Financial Partnership meeting

The Seventh Meeting of the Economic and Financial Partnership (EFP) was held in New Delhi on 1st November, 2019, between the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of India and the Department of the Treasury, United States of America.

The Indian delegation was led by Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance, Government of India and the U.S. delegation was led by Mr. Steven Mnuchin, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

10. South African university, Unitaid tie up to develop child-friendly treatments for multi-drug resistant TB

South Africa’s Stellenbosch University and Unitaid have signed a $18.9 million grant agreement to develop child-friendly treatments and preventive therapy for children suffering from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (TB). The agreement was announced today at the ongoing 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health (WCOLH) in Hyderabad.

11. Agra to host first-ever Global Taj International Film Festival

Agra will host the first-ever Global Taj International Film Festival from November 15-17 and films from around 10 countries will be showcased at the festival. The final screening will have films from India and six other countries, festival director Suraj Tiwari said. It’ll be inaugurated by Raza Murad and the opening speech will be delivered by Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson Chandrashekhar.

12. South Africa defeat England to lift Rugby World Cup

South Africa lifted the Rugby World Cup 2019 title after defeating England 32-12 in the final at Yokohama. This is the third time that the South African team has won the trophy equalling New Zealand’s record. Siya Kolisi became the first black captain from South Africa to lift rugby’s Webb Ellis Cup.

13. Indian sand artist to receive Italian Golden Sand Art Award 2019

Sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik has been selected for the Italian Golden Sand Art Award 2019. He will be honoured at the International Scorrana Sand Nativity in Italy scheduled to be held from November 13 to 18. As many as eight sculptors will participate in this festival and Pattnaik will represent India at the event.
