Okram Ibobi elected as leader of Congress legislature party
In a bid to form government after securing the highest number of seats in Manipur elections, Okram Ibobi Singh has been elected as the leader of Congress legislature party. The Congress had won 42 seats in the 2012 assembly. The BJP, on the other hand, had no members in the outgoing House. Human rights activist Irom Sharmila, who contested against Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, could secure only 90 votes and was relegated to the fourth position.
2. Capt Amarinder Singh to take oath as Punjab CM on March 16
senior Congress party leader Capt. Amarinder Singh is all set to take oath as the chief minister of Punjab on 16 March. The oath taking ceremony will take place on 16 March, he said. However, the scion of erstwhile Patiala Royal family refused to comment on the number of ministers who will be part of the new cabinet. 3. B.P. Kanungo has beed appointed as the RBI deputy governor in place of R. Gandhi
B P Kanungo was appointed deputy governor in Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for three years. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment to the post with effect from the date of taking over the charge on or after April 3. Kanungo was in March last year appointed as Executive Director in the central bank. The ACC has also named Dilip S Shanghvi as Member, Western Local Board of RBI.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the following appointments:
(i) Arun Kumar, IAS Special Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment as Secretary, Ministry of Mines on superannuation of the present incumbent Shri Balvender Kumar, IAS
(ii) Binoy Kumar, IAS Director General, Directorate General of Supplies & Disposals (DGS&D), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, as Director General, Directorate General of Supplies & Disposals (DGS&D), Ministry of Commerce & Industry in the rank and pay of Secretary, by temporarily upgrading the post for a period of two years on until further orders.
(iii) R. Sridharan, IAS , Special Secretary, Ministry of Mines, as Member (Finance), Space Commission, in the rank and pay of Secretary, by restoring the post to the level of Secretary.
(iv) Raghvendra Singh, IAS Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare as Director General, National Archives of India, Ministry of Culture, in the rank and pay of Secretary, by temporarily upgrading the post to the level of Secretary for a period of two years or until further orders..
5. Maritime Admiralty Bill passed by Lok Sabha
The Lok Sabha passed the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims), 2016 that seeks to repeal laws such as the Admiralty Court Act, 1861, the Colonial Courts of Admiralty Act, 1890.
The Lok Sabha passes the Maritime Admiralty Bill, which seeks to consolidate the existing laws on civil matters of admiralty jurisdiction of courts, proceedings on maritime claims and arrest of ships.
6. India’s 1st AC rail ambulance unveiled in Mumbai
Central Railway (CR) has unveiled India’s first air conditioned rail ambulance that is designed to rush for the relief of injured passengers during the vital ‘golden hour’ after a rail disaster. According to a report of Hindustan Times, this rail ambulance is equipped with several medical facilities and the basic treatment can be provided to at least 50 people at a time. The ambulance, which will be stationed at Kalyan, was made by redesigning an AC coach used for passenger service.
7. BJP first party to win over 50 seats in Uttarakhand Assembly
The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to return to power after 14 years as it has swept the state by winning over 300 seats. This was the highest number of seats the party has ever won in the state so far, considering that this was only the second time it won with a comfortable majority. The last time it crossed the 2/3rd mark was in 1991, at the height of the Ram Janam Bhoomi movement, when it won 221 seats.
8. National Archives to celebrate 127th Foundation Day
An exhibition on revolutionary patriots will be held by the National Archives of India to celebrate its 127th Foundation Day on March 11. The exhibition titled ‘Revolutionary Patriots (1905-1947)’ will put on display original documents and literature that was then proscribed at the National Archives premises .
This exhibition has two-fold objective:
- To sensitise the younger generation to the sacrifices made by the revolutionaries in their fight for Independence from the imperial rule
- To inculcate a sense of archival awareness among the public
9. India launches second stage of HCFCs phaseout plan
India has launched the second stage of its plan to phase out Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), greenhouse gases that damage the earth’s ozone layer. It is estimated that with this plan, there would be a net direct CO2-equivalent emission reductions of about 8.5 million metric tonnes annually from 2023. Environment minister Anil Madhav Dave released stage-II of the HCFC phase-out management plan (HPMP). India has already successfully implemented HPMP stage-I.
10 .Government issues draft rules on e-wallet payments
The Centre has issued draft rules to ensure integrity, security and confidentiality of electronic payments made through prepaid payment instruments (PPIs), popularly called e-wallets. The draft rules, on which the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has sought public comments, make it mandatory for e-PPI (electronic pre-payment instrument) issuers to develop an information security policy that ensures that the systems operated by them are secure.
11. NASA shares view of new-found solar system’s star TRAPPIST-1
Astronomers announced that the ultra-cool dwarf star, TRAPPIST-1, hosts a total of seven Earth-size planets that are likely rocky, a discovery made by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope in combination with ground-based telescopes. NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler space telescope also has been observing this star since December 2016. These additional data about TRAPPIST-1 from Kepler are available to the scientific community.
