  1. Trump appoints Indian-American as US Ambassador to Peru

U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Indian-American Krishna R Urs as the new US Ambassador to Peru.  A career service American diplomat since 1986, Mr. Urs is currently Charge d’ Affaires of the US Embassy in Madrid, Spain, where he was also the Deputy Chief of Mission. Mr. Urs earned a MS from the University of Texas and a BS from Georgetown University. He speaks fluent Spanish as well as some Hindi and Telugu.

Dr.Manoj Soni takes oath as Member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He was a former Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University. He has received several awards and recognitions such as“Honorary Mayor-President of the City of Baton Rouge” from Mayor-President of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA and World Education Congress Global Award for Distance Learning Leadership.

  1. Group insurance cover for amarnath pilgrims raised to Rs.3 lakh

The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) has announced to enhance the group insurance cover for the pilgrims and service providers from existing Rs one lakh toRs three lakh. SASB manages the annual yatra to the 3,880-metre high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in South Kashmir, Himalayas. He has announced the enhanced group insurance while interacting with ‘ponywalas’ and ‘pithoowalas’ (pony owners and porters) during a visit to various camps en route the holy cave shrine.

  1. NASA achieves a major milestone in developing Quieter Supersonic Jet

NASA has achieved a significant milestone in developing a quieter supersonic passenger jet that can safely travel over land. The US space agency completed the preliminary design review (PDR) of its Quiet Supersonic Transport (QueSST) aircraft design.

QueSST is the initial design stage of NASA‘s planned Low Boom Flight Demonstration (LBFD) experimental airplane, otherwise known as an X-plane. The QueSST design is capable of fulfilling the LBFD aircraft’s mission objectives, which are to fly at supersonic speeds but create a soft “thump” instead of the disruptive sonic boom associated with supersonic flights.

  1. India’s 18th operational communication satellite in orbit

India added GSAT-17 to its existing fleet of 17 communication satellites, with French rocket Ariane-5 successfully launching the 3,477-kg satellite from French Guiana. The satellite has been inducted into the Indian National Satellite (INSAT)/GSAT system. It carried payloads in the normal C, extended C and S bands, providing various communication services.

GSAT-17 also had equipment for meteorological data relay and satellite-based search and rescue services being provided by earlier INSAT satellites. It is the 21st Indian launch for the Arianespace. Its upcoming GSAT- 11 which weigh morethan 5,000 kg also be launched by Arianespace.

  1. A single device can diagnose tuberculosis, HIV and hepatitis

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new advice to countries, recommending the use of multi-disease testing devices for Tuberculosis, HIV and Hepatitis. A single device called the GeneXpert can be used to diagnose TB and HIV infections, and quantitatively measure HIV and hepatitis C viral loads. India recently procured 600 GeneXpert machines for the National Tuberculosis programme.

  1. Indian army gets first batch of modern bullet-proof helmets

The Indian Army has reportedly received its first batch of bullet-proof helmets from Kanpur-based MKU Industries which was awarded a contract to manufacture 1.58 lakh helmets at the cost of Rs 180 crore.

The new bullet proof helmets are capable of withstanding the impact of 9mm fired shots from a short range. The helmets match global standards of equipment for armed forces.

  1. India 1st to voluntarily contribute $100k to UN tax fund

India has contributed $100,000 to a UN fund to promote the participation of developing countries in a panel dealing with international cooperation in tax matters. Ashish Sinha, a First Secretary in India’s Mission to the UN, handed over the cheque for the UN Tax Fund to Shari Spiegel, chief of the Policy Development and Analysis Branch of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Desa).

This voluntary contribution will be dedicated towards ensuring greater support for developing country participation in the subcommittee meetings of the UN Tax Committee.

  1. Russian navy test-fires submarine-launched missile

The Russian military has successfully test-fired a submarine-launched Inter- continental Ballistic Missile (IBM). The Yuri Dolgoruky is the first in a series of Borei-class submarines carrying the Bulava. The Bulava is commissioned by the Russian Navy after a long cycle of development, carries 6 nuclear warheads and has a range of up to 9,300 kilometers (about 5,770 miles).

  1. Andhra CM announces ₹50 lakh cash reward for Srikanth

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced cash prize of Rs 50 lakhs to shuttler Kidambi Srikanth for winning men’s singles titles at the Indonesian Open Super Series Premier and Australian Open Super Series. Srikanth’s coach, Dronacharya awardee Pullela Gopichand, was also given Rs 15 lakh.

  1. Singer Sabita Chowdhury passes away aged 72

Eminent singer Sabita Chowdhury, widow of legendary composer Salil Chowdhury died. She was 72. Many of her Bengali songs have retained their charm among the public through the decades. She also did playback for a number of Bengali and Hindi films.

Among some of her famous songs are Oi jhilmil jhauer boney, Jaare jaa jaa mono paakhi, Jhilmil jhilmil opaarero monjil and Du chokhey aashaar nodi chhalachhal.
