  1. Lakshmi Vilas Bank appoints B K Manjunath as part-time chairman

Lakshmi Vilas Bank has  informed the stock exchange that subsequent to an approval granted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Board of Directors of the bank at their meeting have co-opted B K Manjunath as additional director in the category of Non-Executive and Independent Director.

Manjunath is a member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a practicing charted accountant for the last 25 years.

  1. K G Karmakar, Gauri Shankar appointed directors of IPPB

K G Karmakar and Gauri Shankar were appointed as Independent Directors of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved their appointment to the post on the board of directors of the bank for a period of three years.

The IPPB has been incorporated as a public sector bank under the Department of Posts with 100 percent equity of the government of India.

  1. UDAAN scheme: Tamil Nadu govt signs MoU with Aviation Ministry

The Government of Tamil Nadu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry for the implementation of the UDAAN scheme in the state. The MoU has been signed at the Secretariat in Fort St George, Chennai, by the officials in presence of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and the Airports Authority of India Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra.

Under the Regional Air Connectivity scheme UDAAN, three of the tier-two industrial towns such as Hosur, Salem and Neyveli are to be developed in the first phase where airstrips are available, though not in use.

  1. Ministry of AYUSH inaugurates 2nd National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga

The second National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga will be inaugurated by Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge), Shri Shripad Yesso Naik at National Media Centre in New Delhi.

The conference is being organized by Ministy of AYUSH in association with Press Information Bureau (PIB), M/o Information & Broadcasting and Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (M/o AYUSH) as a part of celebrations of the 3rd International Day of Yoga on 21st June, 2017.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Yoga for Health and Harmony”.

  1. India signs OECD pact to check tax evasion by MNCs

India has signed the OECD multilateral convention that aims to check cross-border tax evasion by multinational companies. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley signed the multilateral convention in Paris to implement tax treaty-related measures to prevent base erosion and profit shifting.

The Multilateral Convention is an outcome of the OECD/G20 Project to tackle Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) which is resorted to by MNCs through tax planning strategies by exploiting gaps and mismatches in tax rules.

  1. Kerala government implements ‘green protocol’ for weddings

Wedding ceremonies in Kerala are all set to become ‘green’, with the state government coming out with a green-protocol to make the auspicious occasions more nature-friendly.

With the implementation of the protocol, plastic and other non-degradable articles including disposable glasses and plates and thermocol decorations will be kept at bay from marriage functions.

Suchitwa Mission, the state nodal agency for sanitation, has already launched the initiative in Kannur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Alappuzha on a pilot basis.

  1. World Oceans Day- 8 June

World Oceans Day takes place every June 8. It has been celebrated unofficially since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in late 2008.

  1. French President Macron unveils ‘Make our planet great again’ website

French President Emmanuel Macron has launched a website aimed at attracting researchers, entrepreneurs and others to France to pursue efforts to combat climate change. The 39-year-old, who said last week that US President Donald Trump had made a historic error by abandoning the Paris climate accord, used a cheeky twist of Trump’s campaign slogan.

  1. TCS launches app development kit for banks

Global software major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched “BaNCS App Development Kit” (ADK) that will enable banks to fast design and build their own apps and deploy it across devices and desktops seamlessly.

“BaNCS ADK” will help banks to design and deploy both enterprise and consumer apps in a hybrid architecture, adopting modern principles of responsive web design.

  1. India’s growth to remain unchanged at 7.1% in FY17: HSBC

India’s growth is likely to remain unchanged at 7.1 per cent this financial year, as investments are low and government spending may not remain high given the fiscal consolidation path the country is treading, says a report.

“Growth numbers were marked down marginally but still remain higher than ours,” HSBC said in a research note. It further said, “we have a below-consensus view that growth will be flat at 7.1 per cent in 2017-18”.

  1. Indian American Raja Chari among 12 new astronauts chosen by NASA

U.S. Space Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), has chosen 12 new astronauts, including an Indian-American, from a record number of over 18,000 applicants, who will be trained for missions into Earth orbit and to deep space.

Lt Col Raja “Grinder” Chari, 39, is a commander of the 461st Flight Test Squadron and the director of the F-35 Integrated Test Force at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

  1. Rohan Bopanna wins French Open mixed doubles title to clinch maiden Grand Slam

India’s Rohan Bopanna and Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski won the mixed doubles title at the French Open after beating Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Robert Farah of Colombia 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 in the final in Paris. With this win, Bopanna became the fourth Indian — after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza — to lift a Grand Slam trophy.
