  1. AIIMS Delhi wins ₹5-crore govt award for cleanliness

AIIMS was awarded a cash prize of Rs 5 crore for maintaining high standards in sanitation and hygiene and was followed by Shillong’s North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) who came second and received a cash prize of Rs 3 crore for cleanliness.

The third position was awarded to Chandigarh’s Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), who received a cash prize of Rs 1 crore.

  1. Top Scotland Yard award for Indian-origin cop

Shand Panesar, an Indian-origin constable with Scotland Yard, has been awarded this year’s Outstanding Bravery of the Year Award for risking his life with a colleague to rescue a couple from a burning building in London last September.

Panesar and Craig Nicholson were jointly awarded after the public voted for them in the Total Excellence in Policing Awards, which were presented by Metropolitan Police police commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe.

  1. Indian students win Singapore Tata Quiz 2017

Indian students have won all three top awards at a prestigious quiz competition held in Singapore. Defending Champions Rohan Naidu and Shivam Bhardwaj of National University of Singapore (NUS) overcame a stiff competition from Arvind Ramesh and Anshuman Anand of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to win the champion title and trophy of the Tata Crucible Campus Quiz Singapore 2017.

The third place was bagged by Tanushree Kumar and Sahaj Chopra of SP Jain School of Global Management

  1. Sandeep Singh Indian International Hockey Player Receives Honorary Doctorate

Indian professional hockey player Sandeep Singh has been honored with an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Desh Bhagat University, a private educational institution in Amloh, Fatehgarh Sahib District of Punjab.

He is the second Indian hockey player to receive this award. The only first player was Dileep Tirkey, former captain and sitting Member of Parliament, to receive an honorary degree for sporting excellence from Sambalpur University in 2010.

  1. Palanisamy takes oath as TN CM along with 30 ministers

Edappadi K Palaniswami was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by Governor C Vidyasagar Rao.

  • Palaniswami took oath first, followed by 30 ministers in four batches. The swearing in ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan.
  • This is the third ministry in the last 10 months since AIADMK won the assembly election in May 2016.
  1. Ravi Shankar accredited as High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Rwanda

Shri Ravi Shankar presently High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Uganda, has been  concurrently accredited as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Rwanda, with residence in Kampala (Uganda). He is expected to take up his assignment shortly.

  1. Airbus signs MoU for setting up centre of excellence in Hyderabad

Airbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing a Centre of Excellence for aerospace skill development in Hyderabad, together with the Telangana government, National Skill Development Corporation India and AEROCAMPUS France.

The Centre, which will come up at Begumpet Airport, will train candidates ranging from high school graduates to experienced aviation personnel on aircraft manufacturing, logistics, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), ground handling and special aviation processes.

  1. India Joins UN Network to Prevent Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths by 2030.

India is among nine countries that will be part of a global health network focused on improving the quality of care for new mothers and babies and strengthen national efforts to end preventable deaths of pregnant women and newborns by 2030.

The nine countries are India, Bangladesh, A Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda.

  1. HDFC Life Launches ‘Pragati’ Plan For Low Income Group

HDFC life haslaunched Pragati a traditional life insurance plan that has been specifically designed to empower low income families. Pragati makes life insurance easily accessible to every person who wishes to financially secure his family.

  1. France’s Jean-Pierre Lacroix named new UN peacekeeping chief

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has  announced the appointment of Jean-Pierre Lacroix of France to head UN peacekeeping for a year pending a review of the world body’s functions and structure. The UN’s political affairs chief, Jeffrey Feltman of the United States, will remain at this post, also for a year. The two positions of under-secretary-general are among the most high-profile at the United Nations.

  1. Usain Bolt wins Laureus ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award

Usain Bolt was crowned Laureus Sportsman of the Year for a record equalling fourth time matching the achievement of Roger Federer and Serena Williams. The 30-year-old completed the hallowed triple-triple of Olympic sprint titles in Rio last summer .

  1. First Indian genomics beacon launched in UK

Global Gene Corp and Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) has launched the first-ever beacon for Indian genomics data, which is expected to help scientists develop more effective drug delivery systems.

A beacon is an online web service that allows researchers to determine whether an institution has particular genomic data in its data set.

  1. US, Thailand Launched 2017 Cobra Gold Military Exercises

The United States and Thailand will kick off the 2017 iteration of the annual Cobra Gold military exercises, Asia’s largest multinational drill. In over 30 years, Cobra Gold, which began as a bilateral drill between the United States and Thailand – Washington’s oldest ally in Asia – has now grown into one of the world’s largest multinational exercises, involving some 30 countries.

  1. J&K govt launches e-Prison project

The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched the e-Prison project to enumerate jail inmates in the State, where numbers of detainees keep swelling during unrest. State Minister for Information Technology Molvi Imran Raza Ansari, who inaugurated the project in Jammu.

The information about jail inmates is currently being maintained manually. To avoid delays in processing the information and manage all the jails efficiently, the automation of prison department has been started.

  1. Cabinet approves merger of 5 associate banks with SBI

The Cabinet has approved the merger of five associate banks with the State Bank of India (SBI), which will catapult any bank from India to among the top 50 global lenders for the first time. The merger does not include Bharatiya Mahila Bank.

  • The five associate banks are State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore.
  • The merger will create a bank with a projected asset book of Rs 37 lakh crore by March 31. As of December 2016, the asset book was Rs 33.5 lakh crore.
