  1. Dhirendra Pal Singh appointed UGC chairman

Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh was appointed the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Prof. Singh is at present the director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bengaluru.

  1. UN appoints Henrietta Fore as UNICEF head

UN chief Antonio Guterres has appointed former senior US government official Henrietta H Fore as the new executive director of UNICEF.

 Fore, 69, has worked to champion economic development, education and health, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief for the most vulnerable in the international and developing world.

  1. Airtel Payments Bank head Shashi Arora quits

Airtel Payments Bank Managing Director and CEO Shashi Arora has resigned in the wake of the firm’s eKYC licence suspension by Aadhaar-issuing body UIDAI.

Arora has been working with Airtel in senior leadership roles since 2006. He was appointed MD and CEO of Airtel Payments Bank on June 1, 2016.

The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) had barred Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based verification of customers using the eKYC process.

  1. Salman Khan tops Forbes India Celebrity 100 list for second straight year

Bollywood star Salman Khan has been ranked numero uno on the sixth Forbes India Celebrity 100 List. Shah Rukh Khan and India’s cricket captain Virat Kohli took the second and third spot respectively, with actor Priyanka Chopra the only female celebrity in the top 10 list.

The 2017 Forbes India Celebrity 100 List rankings are based on estimates of entertainment-related earnings of celebrities. The period under consideration is October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017.

  1. Bill to set up Prayagraj Mela Authority passed in UP Assembly

Days after the UNESCO declared the Kumbh a world heritage, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly has passed a bill to set up Prayagraj Mela Authority for the Kumbh Mela scheduled to be held in Allahabad in January 2019.

The UNESCO recently recognised the Kumbh Mela as an “intangible cultural heritage of humanity” and held it as the world’s largest peaceful gathering of pilgrims.

The Kumbh Mela is believed to be the largest religious gathering on earth and is held every 12 years on the banks of the ‘Sangam’ – the confluence of the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati – in Allahabad.

  1. U’khand CM launches his biography

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has launched a biography based on chronicles of his early struggle and lesser known aspects of his life.

Titled ‘Trivendra Ek Zindaginama – Khairasain ka Sooraj’, the book is written by a doctor named Nandan Singh Bisht.

  1. Chouhan lays foundation of Rewa Ultra Mega Solar project

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has laid foundation stone of 750 MW Ultra Mega Solar Project at Rewa in Madhya Pradesh.

The transaction structure of Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project has been awarded World Bank Groups President award for Innovation and Excellence.

Rewa Solar Project is utilising barren and rocky land for productive purposes and being one of the largest in the world has potential to become a tourist attraction.

  1. Kolkata Police Museum and Library inaugurated

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has inaugurated the newly constructed Kolkata Police Museum and Library.

Housed in a heritage building on Ripon Street, the museum hosts a state-of-the-art library with over 15,000 books ranging from old classics to current bestsellers.

Banerjee also released ‘My Golden Days’, an autobiography of Gurbux Singh while inaugurating the Christmas Festival at Park Street.

  1. December 22, 2017: National Mathematics Day

December 22 is also known as ‘National Mathematics Day’. The former Prime Minister of India declared this day as National Mathematics Day on February 26, 2012 when he was visiting the Madras University in order to pay tribute to Ramanujan’s achievements and celebrate his 125th birth anniversary.

S Ramanujan was one of the most influential mathematicians of his time. He was born on December 22, 1887.

11. India’s First design University Opens in Haryana

India’s first and only design university, World University of Deisgn opened it campus at Sonipat, Haryana.

Promoted by Om Parkash Bansal Educational and Social Welfare Trust of Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, having more than two decades of presence in higher education, the university is currently located in a sprawling lush green picturesque campus with the state-of-the-art infrastructure and world class facilities.

12. Former UP Governor Banwari Lal Joshi passes away

Former Uttar Pradesh governor Banwari Lal Joshi passed away. He was the former police officer, who served as governor of several states.

He was governor of Uttar Pradesh from 2009 to 2014. Before that he was lieutenant governor of Delhi from 2004 to 2007 and also served as governor in Meghalaya and Uttarakhand.
