  1. NITI Aayog announces winners of the Women Transforming India Awards 2017

NITI Aayog, in partnership with MyGov and the United Nations, announces winners of the Women Transforming India Awards, 2017.

Crowd sourcing thousands of stories of women undertaking phenomenal work to transform societies across India’s cities, towns and villages, the second edition of the Awards, celebrates the critical role of women in empowering themselves and their communities.

Winners List: Laxmi Agarwal, Safeena Husain, Kamal Kumbhar, Subasini Mistry, Arunima Sinha, Jamuna Tudu.

  1. HSBC India investment banking head Sunil Sanghai quits

Foreign lender HSBC India’s vice chairman and investment banking head Sunil Sanghai quit the British banking giant and joined hands with the Dinesh Kanabar-promoted tax and regulatory firm Dhruva Advisors to start a merchant banking division.

Sanghai, who has been occupying the current position since March 2016 and with HSBC since 2010, quit the bank earlier during the day.

  1. Rajnath Singh inaugurates YUVA – a skill development programme

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the YUVA – a skill development programme and an initiative by Delhi Police under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.  The aim of these kinds of initiatives improves the image of the police among common man.

The ‘YUVA’ initiative by Delhi Police aims to connect with youth by upgrading their skill as per their competencies. It will help them to get a gainful employment under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna under the Ministry of Skill Development.

Delhi Police has tied up with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for providing mass job linked skill training for the selected youth.

  1. Wellness India 2017 Expo

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh has initiated Wellness India 2017 Expo.

the opening day of the 3-day “Wellness India 2017 Expo”  for individuals who did not have any disease but suffered from lack of physical or mental well-being which compromised their output and performance thus not allowing them to achieve the best of their potential.

  1. PM Modi inaugurates and does Bhoomi Poojan for NH projects worth Rs.15,100 crores in Rajasthan

Prime Minister Modi has said that his government is fully committed to timely completion of work. The PM was to mark the inauguration and Bhoomi Poojan for National Highways projects worth Rs 15,100 crores in Udaipur in Rajasthan.

Modi inaugurated 12 National Highways projects worth Rs 5610 crores and did Bhoomi Poojan for 11 projects worth Rs 9490 crores. These highways will help farmers, give a boost to tourism and open up economic opportunities for the local people. He said these highways would not only help link Rajasthan more efficiently but would also be gate ways to progress.

  1. Airtel ties up with Symantec

The country’s largest telecom services provider, Bharti Airtel, entered into a partnership with Symantec Corp, the world’s leading cyber Security Company, to serve the growing cyber security requirements of businesses in India.

It will provide protection and prevention of online threats in an increasingly digitally connected world. According to the agreement, Airtel will be the exclusive Cyber Security Services partner for Symantec in India, and will distribute Symantec’s enterprise security software.

  1. DRDO-IAI to deliver medium range Missile MRSAM System to Indian Army By 2020

T he Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signed Rs.17,000 crore deal with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for producing advanced medium range surface to air missile (MRSAM) system.

The deal envisages developing 40 firing units and around 200 missiles. The MR-SAM, a land-based version of long range surface to air missile (LRSAM) of Indian Navy strike range of up 70 kilometers.

The Indian Army compelling the government to enhance its aerial attack capability considering the evolving security challenges.

  1. National Sports Day: 29th August

The National Sports Day is observed every year on 29th august every year to birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand who was born on 29 August 1905.

He would have been 112 years old. To celebrate the day, Government had conducted various programs throughout the country.

On this occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind presented National sports Awards to 29 players. The President conferred Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award.

 

  1. Fringe benefits availed by employees liable to GST

The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be applicable on any non-monetary fringe benefit an employee gets from his employer. Monetary compensation paid to employees is not considered supply and will not attract GST.

The monetary income will, however, continue to attract the relevant income tax. The compensation to employees in the form of money is not a supply. However, fringe benefits are a supply of goods or services and are liable to tax if not exempted. The fringe benefits are transactions in furtherance of business.

  1. Twitter launches digital education programme for media agency professionals in Asia Pacific

Twitter has kicked off its new media agency programme called #TweetToTheTop in India. Eleven agencies from global media and advertising networks including Dentsu, GroupM, IPG and Omnicom will be participating in this initiative.

#TweetToTheTop is Twitter’s first year-long agency engagement programme dedicated to media executives in five countries in Asia Pacific: India, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.  #TweetToThetop aims to attract hundreds of young media planne

  1. India, Germany ink pact to boost green energy ties

India has entered into a pact with Germany to improve parameters for grid integration of renewable energies.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH India on behalf of Germany signed an agreement on technical cooperation under the “Indo-German Energy Programme – Green Energy Corridors (IGEN-GEC)”.

This relationship between GIZ and India will result in improved market mechanisms and regulations and help train manpower in India to ensure grid stability to ensure more and more integration of renewables in the country.

  1. Kenya just imposed the world’s toughest law against plastic bags

Kenyans producing, selling or even using plastic bags will risk imprisonment of up to four years or fines of $40,000, as the world’s toughest law aimed at reducing plastic pollution came into effect.

The East African nation joins more than 40 other countries that have banned, partly banned or taxed single use plastic bags, including China, France, Rwanda, and Italy.

Many bags drift into the ocean, strangling turtles, suffocating seabirds and filling the stomachs of dolphins and whales with waste until they die of starvation. Kenya’s law allows police to go after anyone even carrying a plastic bag.

  1. Island of Tuvalu World’s Least Visited Country: UN Report

According to a report by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the island of Tuvalu was the least visited country in 2016.

According to the report, 2,000 people visited Tuvalu in 2016, while 1,000 people visited the country in 2014. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Tuvalu is 4.6 meters above sea level and has a population of 11,000 people.

  1. Indian U-15 Football Team claim SAFFChampionships Title

The Indian U-15 football team completed a brilliant comeback win over Nepal to win the SAFF U-15 (South Asian Football Federation) Championships in Kathmandu.

They were trailing 0-1 at the interval, but second half goals from Lalrokima and Vikram clinched the trophy for the Indian side. Bangladesh’s Foysal Ahmed declared as the top scorer of the tournament. India’s Vikram Pratap Singh was chosen as the Best player of the tournament.

  1. P V Sindhu won Silver at World Badminton Championship 2017

PV Sindhu won the Silver medal in World Badminton Championship 2017.She lost the historic match against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in an epic final,in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the longest match of the tournament, Sindhu lost (19-21 22-20 20-22) after battling hard for one hour and 49 minutes. For India, it still is a historic edition since for the first time country’s shuttler are returning with two medals. Saina Nehwal won a bronze.

  1. Hamilton wins Belgian Grand Prix

Mercedes’ British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton registered his 58th career race win after claiming the Belgian Grand Prix title.

Hamilton’s rival Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel came second, while Daniel Ricciardo was placed third. With the win, Hamilton has cut Vettel’s lead at the top of the drivers’ championship to seven points.

  1. Legendary Footballer and Olympian Ahmed Khan Passes Away

Ahmed Khan, a member of India’s gold winning football team at the first Asian Games in 1951, passed away at the age of 91 after a prolonged illness. Khan represented India in two Olympic Games– 1948 in London and 1952 in Helsinki apart from two Asian Games in Delhi and 1954 in Manila.

Khan, who played as a striker represented India in 11 matches and made his debut against France in the London Olympics. He scored 3 goals including one against Yugoslavia in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

18. International Day against Nuclear Tests29th August

The UN-established International Day against Nuclear Tests was observed across the world on August 29 ‘to galvanize the United Nations, Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, youth networks and the media to inform, educate and advocate the necessity of banning nuclear weapon tests as a valuable step towards achieving a safer world’.

Since 2010 the event is being observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world, such as symposia, conferences, exhibits, competitions, publications, and lectures in academic institutions, media broadcasts and other initiatives.
