  1. Justice Dipak Misra sworn-in as 45th Chief Justice of India

Justice Dipak Misra was sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India. At a brief ceremony in the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Ramnath Kovind administered the oath of office to Misra. Justice Misra took the oath in English in the name of God.

Justice Misra, 64, assumes office following the retirement of Justice J S Khehar on 27 August 2017. Justice Misra will remain in office till October 2, 2018. As per the established practice, Justice Khehar had named Misra as the next CJI last month.

  1. Tata Sons names Roopa Purushothaman as Chief Economist & Head of Policy Advocacy

Tata Sons appointed Roopa Purushothaman as Chief Economist and Head of Policy Advocacy to drive macro-economic research as well as all policy and advocacy initiatives as relevant to the businesses of the salt-to-software conglomerate.

Purushothaman joins Tata Sons from Everstone Capital, where she was leading the research function. Before that, she was with Goldman Sachs International as Vice President & Global Economist. She will join the group with effect from 1st September 2017.

  1. Karnataka tourism dept launches Dasara package on Golden Chariot

Karnataka’s Department of Tourism has announced Dasara Special Tour Packages. The department, through its arm KSTDC, plans to launch the ‘Dasara Special Tour Package’ in the Golden Chariot Luxury Train, to promote the state festival.

The Golden Chariot is South India’s first and only luxury tourist train run by KSTDC. With its exquisite accommodation, décor inspired by dynasties from Karnataka’s past, fine dining and service by liveried attendants, the Golden Chariot gives you a glimpse of the rich heritage of Karnataka and a feel of royalty on wheels.

  1. Jaitley launches BEML’s metro manufacturing facility

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has launched BEML’s third Line ultra modern metro manufacturing facility to enhance the production of metro cars for the forthcoming metro projects in India.

Earlier in the morning, he inaugurated the indigenously designed and developed biggest ever diesel excavator BE1800D and crawler dozer BD475-1 and T-72 hull, meant for fitting into tanks, at Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) unit of Bharath Earth Movers Limited.

  1. Arun Jaitley Hands Over LRSAM To Indian Navy

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley handed over the Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) jointly developed by India and Israel, to the Indian Navy, at Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL). LRSAM is an advanced combat suit for missile defence against air targets and missiles, and has full capabilities of air and surface surveillance, threat alert and fire control.

The minister also dedicated a first-of-its kind 50-tonne Rocket Motor Static Test Facility. He inaugurated the ASTRA Manufacturing Unit at the BDL’s Bhanur unit.

  1. IRDAI Launches Central Database Of Insurance Sales Persons

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has launched a Central Database of all Insurance Sales Persons in the country.

Named as `Envoy’, the database will ensure that all licensed insurance sales persons working for insurers and intermediaries including entities such as insurance agents, broker qualified persons, specified persons of corporate agents do not work with multiple insurers and intermediaries in the same business category.

  1. India and China announce end of Doklam standoff

The 71-day military standoff at Doklam, on the tri-junction of the Indian, Chinese and Bhutanese borders, has been defused without armed confrontation and bloodshed.

In a coordinated announcement, the Indian and Chinese foreign ministries both announced that troops were disengaging at the Doklam bowl, where they have been in eyeball-to-eyeball contact since June 16, when the Indian Army moved hundreds of soldiers and two bulldozers into the disputed area to block road construction by China.

  1. NPCI approves Spice Digital’s operation under Bharat Bill Payment System

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given a nod to Spice Digital Ltd. for processing bill payments under the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) as a Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit (BBPOU).

The BBPS through its centralised bill payment system will allow the users to use a single website or outlet to pay all their monthly or repetitive bills such as mobile phone and electricity.

Bill payments is a major component of the retail payment transactions in India, and is characterized by the presence of large number of billers, and aggregators, who provide a variety of payment options to customers.

  1. Uber introduces 2 new features

Ridesharing app Uber has announced a phased rollout of two new features, namely ‘In-app chat’ and ‘multi-destination’.

The in-app chat feature aims to help riders and driver partners get in touch with one another to provide information such as their exact location, while the multi-destination feature enables riders add multiple stops along their route.

  1. S. imposes first economic sanctions against Venezuela

Trump administration restricted Venezuela’s ability to borrow money from American creditors, a prohibition intended to starve President Nicolás Maduro’s troubled government of much-needed cash.

The Treasury Department, following through on President Donald Trump’s threat of economic sanctions, banned debt trades for bonds issued by the Venezuelan government and its state-owned oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela SA, the economy’s financial driver.

  1. Taiwan Launches First Homegrown Satellite From US Air Base

Taiwan has launched Formosat-5, the first homegrown observation satellite, from an air base in the US, the island nation’s National Space Organisation (NSO) announced.

The octagonal satellite – 2 metres high and 1.2 metres in diameter – cost some 3 billion Taiwanese dollars ($100 million) and made contact with a station in Norway.

The satellite is equipped with Complementary Metal-oxide-semiconductor sensors to observe the Earth. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen called the launch a great leap that demonstrates Taiwan’s technological progress.

PV Sindhu grabbed a silver medal at World Badminton Championships at Glasgow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised ace shuttler PV Sindhu for her performance.

She cruised into the final of the Badminton World Championships with an easy win over Chen Yufei of China.

  1. World Badminton Championships: Saina Gets Bronze

Saina Nehwal settled for a bronze medal as her impressive run at the World Badminton Championships came to an end after a heartbreaking loss against Rio Olympics bronze medallist Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the women’s singles semi-finals.

Saina, who had won a silver medal two years ago at Jakarta, gave everything in a battle of attrition but Okuhara’s never-say-die attitude helped her to outmaneuver the Indian in an energy-sapping semifinal clash at the Emirates Arena.

  1. Hamilton wins Belgian GP to register 58th career race win

Lewis Hamilton celebrated his 200th Formula One race in style with a pole-to-flag Belgian Grand Prix victory for Mercedes that halved Sebastian Vettel’s championship lead to seven points.

The Briton’s fifth success in 12 races this season, and 58th of his career, came a day after he equalled Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 68 pole positions.
