  1. Aparna appointed Executive Director, World Bank

Senior bureaucrat S Aparna, presently Principal Secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, has been appointed as an Executive Director in the World Bank in the US.

She replaces Subhash Garg who was recently appointed as Economic Affairs Secretary, Union Ministry of Finance.

At the World Bank, she will represent the constituency of India, Bangladesh, Bhutanand Sri Lanka for three years.

  1. Rajiv Kumar appoints as Vice-Chairperson of NITI Aayog

Noted economist Rajiv Kumar will be the next Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, which is a think-tank that replaced the Planning Commission. He will succeed Arvind Panagariya, who had recently quit as Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog.

Meanwhile, the Centre has also appointed Vinod Paul, a Paediatrician at AIIMS, as a member of NITI Aayog.

  1. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is the brand ambassador of the Swachh Bharat Mission in UP

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the appointment of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar as the brand ambassador of the Swachh Bharat Mission in the state and also made his upcoming film “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” tax free.

The movie stresses on the importance of building toilets and ending open defecation in the country.

  1. Chabahar Port likely to be operational by 2018: Nitin Gadkari

Amid deepening Indo-Iranian ties, the government is hopeful that the strategic Chabahar Port will be operational by 2018.

The Road, Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister will represent India at the oath taking ceremony Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

  1. Nasscom, Arcesium set up first digital literacy centre in Telangana

Nasscom Foundation and post-trade technology firm Arcesium jointly established the first rural digital literacy centre in Telangana, in Peddashapur village, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The Centre trains people in use of computers and mobile phones so that they will be able to register for Aadhar, ration, PAN cards, pay bills, send emails and use the internet for multiple utilities.

The initiative is under the ePradhan Mantri Gamin Digital Saksharta Abhiyaan.

Arcesium is supporting the training infrastructure and the trainers at the centre with the help of its implementation partner, Nirmaan Organisation.

  1. Aadhaar number has been made mandatory for the registration of death from 1st of October

The government has made Aadhaar number mandatory for issuance of death certificates. The rule comes into effect on 1st October.

The rule will come into force across the country except Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya. It will provide an effective method to prevent identity fraud.

Under the new rule, applications for a death certificate would have to provide the Aadhaar number, or enrollment number of the dead person.

  1. 7 August 2017: National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is being observed on 7 August 2017 to encourage people to use hand-made loom in the country. The main event will be held in Guwahati to celebrate the third National Handloom Day.

National Handloom Day, to be celebrated every year due to its significance in India’s history, as ‘Swadeshi Movement’ was launched in 1905 on this day. The movement involved revival of domestic products and production processes.

  1. Mughalsarai railway station rename as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya

The centre has approved a proposal to rename the Mughalsarai railway station in Uttar Pradesh after RSS ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.

The proposal was given by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh in a bid to revive the legacy of Upadhyaya, who died in 1968 at the junction itself.

The station contains the largest railway marshaling yard in Asia. It is 12.5 km long and handles around 1,500 wagons daily. The largest wagon repair workshop of the Indian Railways is also located.

  1. Justice Srikrishna committee on Institutionalization of Arbitration Mechanism

A High-Level Committee set up to review the Institutionalization of Arbitration Mechanismin India submitted its report to the Union Law Ministry. It was headed by Justice (retired) BN Srikrishna.

The Union Government is committed to the speedy resolution of commercial disputes and to make India an international hub of Arbitration.

Ravi Shankar Prasad is the current Union Minister holding Law and Justice and Ministry of Information Technology portfolio in the Government of India.

  1. IISC Researchers develop low-cost, sensitive CO sensor

Indian Institute of Science researchers have developed a highly sensitive nanometre-scale carbon monoxide sensor by employing an innovative fabrication technique.

It is known that carbon monoxide (CO) can have adverse effects on the health of people exposed to it. Hence, it becomes necessary to have good, low-cost carbon-monoxide sensors.

  1. Hubble detects exoplanet with glowing water atmosphere

An international team of researchers, led by the University of Exeter, made the new discovery by observing glowing water molecules in the atmosphere of the exoplanet WASP-121b with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

In order to study the gas giant’s stratosphere – a layer of atmosphere where temperature increases with higher altitudes – scientists used spectroscopy to analyse how the planet’s brightness changed at different wavelengths of light.

The discovery was made by an International team of researchers led by the University of Exeter by observing glowing water molecules in WASP-121b’s atmosphere.

  1. Vijender Singh beats Zulpikar Maimaitiali to win WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title

Indian professional boxer Vijender Singh outslugged his Chinese opponent Zulpikar Maimaitiali to retain the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title and win the WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title.

In the pro boxing bout, termed as ‘Battleground Asia’, at Mumbai, Vijender recorded a unanimous decision win over his Chinese opponent and continued his undefeated streak. It was Beijing Olympic bronze medallist’s ninth successive win in his professional career.

  1. Robert Hardy, Harry Potter actor, dies at 91

British actor Robert Hardy, known for his role in the “Harry Potter” movie franchise and as the star of the TV series “All Creatures Great and Small,” has died. He was 91.
