1. 64th National Film Awards, 2016 announced

The 64th National Film Awards 2016 were announced by the Chairpersons of the juries on Feature Films, Non Feature Films, Best Writing on Cinema and Most Film Friendly State Award. The Feature Film Central panel was headed by Shri Priyadarshan, an eminent Film filmmaker popularly known for his Malayalam movie Kanchivaram. The Chairperson for Non – Feature Film Jury was Shri Raju Mishra while the Chairperson for Writing Jury was Ms. Bhawana Somaaya. The Most Film Friendly State award which was introduced as a new category was announced by Shri Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi, a popular Director in Telugu film industry. The National Film Awards would be presented by Hon’ble President of India on May 3rd, 2017.

  1. Bhimaraya Metri joins as Director of IIM Trichy

Bhimaraya Metri has taken over as Director of IIM Trichy. He succeeds Prafulla Agnihotri who was the B-school’s founding director.Prior to joining IIM Trichy, Metri was the Dean at L&T Institute of Project Management, Vadodara. He also served as a Professor & Dean at MDI Gurgaon, IMI, New Delhi and as Professor In-charge of the Ph.D. Programmes at BITS Pilani. Metri has rich academic administrative experience. An authority in the field of quality, project management and SCM, he has published over 100 research articles. He is also co-authored six books.

  1. RBL Bank opens IFSC Banking Unit in GIFT City

RBL Bank has announced the opening of its IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). The leading private sector bank had received an in-principle approval from RBI for setting up IBU in November, 2016. This will give RBL Bank access to international financial markets. RBL Bank will raise foreign currency funds to meet its requirements in IBU and fund offshore subsidiaries of Indian companies, other foreign firms, and eligible Indian companies (via ECBs, bonds etc.), said Vishwavir Ahuja, Managing Director and CEO.

4. President of India inaugurates first NIMCARE World Health Day Summit 2017 

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the first NIMCARE World Health Day Summit 2017 on April 7, 2017 in New Delhi. NIMCARE has taken the lead in organizing this Conference on World Health Day. The slogan of the first NIMCARE World Health Day Summit is, ‘Unite for a Healthy Mind’.

Productivity of human beings  whether in workforce or in family situations, gets reduced significantly if one has any mental disorder. Mental health disorders span a very wide range from simple disorders to very complex situations. It is often seen that simpler disorders, if not managed in time, tend to become more complex putting the patient at higher risk of morbidity. Such patients often become a bigger burden on the families.

  1. India and ADB Sign $175 Million Loan Agreement to help improve Solar Transmission System

The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $175 million loan agreement to support construction of high voltage transmission systems to evacuate power generated from new mega solar parks to the interstate grid, and improve reliability of the national grid system.

The loan will be given to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) and will include subprojects in various locations in India. As an innovative feature, the project is designed to adopt the country systems on both safeguards and procurement at the agency level. This will be the ADB’s first breakthrough of the country system’s application to a specific project.

6.     Venkaiah Naidu to inaugurate 3-day National Children’s Film Festival

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate a three-day National Children’s Film Festival in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is the largest film festival for children in the country giving the audience quality and wholesome entertainment. The aim of the film festival is to expose children to quality cinema and to introduce novel elements beyond films.

7.      Uma Bharti Launches MIS for Monitoring PMKSY Projects

Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Sushri Uma Bharti launched MIS for monitoring PMKSY project in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion the Minister said the MIS will help in quick monitoring of PMKSY projects. Expressing satisfaction over the execution of various PMKSY projects the Minister said that 21 projects having irrigation potential of 5.22 Lakh hectare will be over by June this year. She said another 33 projects will be over by 2017-18 (Potential Utilization of 12.95 Lakh Hect.) and the balance 45 projects have been identified to be completed by March, 2019 (Potential Utilization of 48.54 Lakh Ha.).

The Minister said issues in respect of many other projects which were at standstill such as Gosikhurd in Maharashtra have been streamlined and are getting back on track so as to meet the completion targets of March 2019.

  1. Maharashtra Cabinet approves draft Bill of Journalists Protection Act 

The Maharashtra cabinet has gave its approval to the draft Bill on the law prohibiting attacks on journalists (Journalists Protection Act). The bill will be tabled in both the Houses of the state Legislature tomorrow, the last day of the ongoing budget session. The state cabinet has gave its nod to the bill seeking to prevent attacks on journalists, which will be tabled in both the Houses of the Legislature tomorrow for the passage. The draft of the bill prepared by the government was circulated to journalist bodies for suggestions and objections late last year. The government prepared the final draft after suggestions and objections were submitted. The bill seeks to make attack on journalist a non-bailable offence. The attacker will have to pay a fine and also foot the medical bill of the victim.

  1. Astronomers detect atmosphere around Earth-like planet GJ 1132b

Astronomers have for the first time detected an atmosphere around an Earth-like planet just 39 light years away, a significant step towards the detection of life beyond our solar system. Scientists, including those from Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, studied the planet known as GJ 1132b, which is 1.4-times the size of our planet. They imaged the planet’s host star, GJ 1132, and measured the slight decrease in brightness as the planet and its atmosphere absorbed some of the starlight while passing directly in front of their host star.

10.   India & Israel sign defense deals worth over 2 billion dollars

Israel has signed a USD 2 billion contract with India to supply it with missile defence systems, the state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in an announcement said that it has been awarded its largest defence contract of almost USD 2 billion for supplying advanced medium-range surface-to-air missile systems (MRSAM) to India. The contract is worth USD 1.6 billion for IAI, with the rest going to another state-owned defence company Rafael, that will be providing components for the systems.

11.  April 7: World Health Day

World Health Day is celebrated on 7th of April every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization. The theme of 2017 World Health Day is ‘Depression: Let’s Talk’. More than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015. WHO is leading a one-year global campaign on depression which is the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide. The goal of the campaign is that more people with depression, everywhere in the world, both seek and get help.
