Canada and India signed 5 year deal for uranium supplies

India and Canada entered into deal for uranium supplies on 15th April 2015. The agreement on sale of uranium had opened up “a new era of bilateral cooperation” between India and Canada.

  • Canada is the world’s second-largest producer of uranium behind Kazakhstan.
  • Canada exports more than 1 billion Canadian dollars ($801 million) worth each year.
  • Canada and India laid the foundation for Cameco’s uranium-supply deal with a nuclear cooperation agreement that took effect in September 2013.
  • Canada has agreed to supply 3,000 metric tonnes of uranium to India under a $254 million five-year deal to power Indian atomic reactors.
  • The agreement comes in line with the Canada- India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement that took effect in 2013.
  • These supplies will be under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.
