Operation Sulaimani to eradicate Poverty in Kozhikode District

In an initiative to eradicate poverty from the district, the Kozhikode district administration is all set to implement a project named ‘Operation Sulaimani’ to ensure food for the needy in its jurisdiction. Operation Sulaimani is being implemented in association with the state Hotel and Restaurants Association. Following the implementation of the project, the needy will get food free of cost.

They will get food from selected restaurants in the district in each locality. Instead of payment, the customers have to give coupons distributed by the district administration. The coupons will be distributed through the counters to be opened in the collectorate, village office and Taluk offices.

Former Finance Minister Clement Mouamba appointed as PM of Congo

Mouamba Clement, the former Congolese Finance Minister, has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Congo. He was appointed to the post by Congo’s President Denis Sassou Nguesso. Clement will be responsible for forming a government in consultation with the president in accordance with the 25 October 2015 constitution.

Also, his major task after being appointed as Prime Minister would be to help in creating jobs for the youth, a majority of whom are struggling with under unemployment. This task will be linked with diversifying the country’s economy to achieve the President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s ambition of making Congo an emerging country by 2025, the program on the basis of which he was elected known as Path towards development.

World Malaria Day – March 25

On April 25th people across the globe take part in a wide range of activities to mark World Malaria Day. The Day is an international observance commemorated every year on 25 April and recognizes global efforts to control malaria. Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.

WMD is one of eight official global public health campaigns currently marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day.

Indo-Thai Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT)

INS Karmuk, an indigenously built Missile Corvette based at the Andaman and Nicobar Command, along with a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, are participating in the 22nd Indo-Thai Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT), scheduled from 19-27 Apr 16 in the Andaman Sea.

Maritime interaction between India and Thailand has been growing steadily with frequent port visits, participation in multilateral exercises and training exchanges. Under the broad ambit of this strong maritime relationship, the two navies have been carrying out CORPATs along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) twice a year since 2005, with the aim of keeping this vital part of the Indian Ocean Region safe and secure for commercial shipping and international trade.

Japan successfully tested its first stealth fighter X-2 jet

Japan joined the exclusive stealth jet club with the successful test flight of its first radar-evading aircraft — a prototype called the X-2. The twin-engine jet — painted in the national red and white colors — took off from Japan’s Nagoya airport and completed various test maneuvers including climbing, descent and circling.

According to Mitsubishi, the X-2 prototype took off on April 22 from Nagoya Airport under the command of a company test pilot. After carrying out a series of basic flight maneuvers, such as climbing, descent, and circling, it landed at the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s Gifu Air Base, where the pilot described the flight as “extremely stable.”

Russia defeated China to win gold at World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship

Russia defeated China 7-5 to win gold at the world mixed doubles curling championship at the Lofbergs Lila Arena. The United States outscored Scotland 9-7 to win the bronze. Saskatoon’s Dustin Kalthoff and Marliese Kasner topped Estonia 8-2 to give Canada a fifth-place result.

The combined results of the 2016 and 2017 world mixed doubles events will decide the seven teams who will join host South Korea at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Bryan Brothers won Barcelona Open Men’s Doubles title

Bob and Mike Bryan won the Barcelona Open doubles tennis title after defeating Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas and the Spaniard Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 25 minutes. The twin brothers took advantage of their experience and mutual chemistry against Cuevas and Granollers who played on Sunday their first doubles final, reports Efe.

This is the Bryan brothers’ second title in 2016, after they won the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas earlier this year, while Sunday’s final match victory is their third in Barcelona, as they won the tournament before in 2003 and 2008, while they lost the 2011 final.

Rafael Nadal beats Kei Nishikori to win Barcelona Open

Rafael Nadal beat the defending champion, Kei Nishikori, 6-4, 7-5 to win the Barcelona Open for the ninth time, equalling Guillermo Vilas’s record of 49 career clay-court titles. Nadal added this title to his trophy from Monte Carlo last week as the 14-time grand slam winner regains form on his favourite surface before next month’s French Open.

Nishikori had won the tournament for the last two years after early exits by Nadal. In an entertaining clash of the two top-seeded players Nadal proved more decisive under pressure, saving seven of eight break points in the first set while converting the two chances he got. The Spaniard then bettered second-seeded Nishikori through several superb rallies in a back-and-forth second set to win key points and claim his 69th career title in his 101st final.

Garcia-Mladenovic defeated Sania-Hingis to win Stuttgart Grand Prix tournament

French pair of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic have won women’s doubles final of the Stuttgart Grand Prix tournament. In the final held at Stuttgart in Germany, the French duo defeated the Indo-Swiss pair of top seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis 6-2, 1-6, 6-10. On the other hand, the women’s singles title was won by Angelique Kerber of Germany. In the final clash, the reigning Australian Open champion Kerber defeated her countrywoman Laura Siegemund 6-4, 6-0.

Stuttgart Grand Prix tournament is a women’s tennis tournament played on indoor clay courts. First played in 1978, it is Europe’s oldest indoor women’s event and is the lone indoor clay tournament on the calendar.

Wrestler Sandeep Tomar qualified for Rio Olympics

Wrestler Sandeep Tomar secured an Olympic quota place for India in the men’s 57 kg freestyle category with a bronze-medal finish on the final day of the first World Olympic Qualifying tournament in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. The 25-year-old Sandeep became the fourth Indian wrestler after Yogeshwar Dutt (men’s 65 kg freestyle), Narsingh Yadav (men’s 74 kg freestyle), and Hardeep Singh (Greco-Roman 98 kg) to book a berth for the Rio Games, to be held later this year.

Tomar won gold medals at the 2016 Asian Wrestling Championships and the 2013 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. India have already secured Olympics spots in 65 kg and 67 kg Freestyle events, and 98 kg in Greco-Roman.

Mairaj wins India’s first skeet medal at a shooting WC

Indian shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan made a successful start to his campaign at the ISSF World Cup by winning a silver medal in men’s skeet event in Rio de Janeiro. Mairaj’s feat gave India its first skeet medal at a World Cup. The 40-year-old Indian shooter finished with an overall tally of 14 in the gold medal match but lost out to Marcus Svensson of Sweden in a shoot off after the latter was also tied at 14.

Tamarro Casandro of Italy won the bronze. Mairaj shot 122 in the qualifying, 15/16 in semi-final stage of six-men final round and then 14+1 in the gold medal match.
