28 October 2016: National Ayurveda Day

Accordig to the Ayush Ministry  National Ayurveda Day  will be observed on October 28 across the country. The Ministry is also organising a day-long National Seminar on Prevention and Control of Diabetes through Ayurveda on the occasion. A statement from the Ministry also said that it will launch Mission Madhumeha through Ayurveda on the occasion.

  • “The Mission Madhumeha will be implemented throughout the country through a specially designed National Treatment Protocol for effective management of Diabetes through Ayurveda,” the statement said.
  • Manoj Nesari, Advisor to the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), told that states across the country have been informed about this decision and the theme will be ‘Ayurveda for Prevention and Control of Diabetes.’
  • Dhanvantari is the God of Ayurveda and it is only fitting that National Ayurveda Day is observed on Dhanvantari Jayanti or Dhanteras.
  • State AYUSH directorates, ayurveda educational institutions and pharmaceutical companies will commemorate the occasion by organizing public lectures, seminars and exhibitions.
  • Health check-up camps and awareness programmes will be held on the occasion.

MINISTRY OF AYUSH

  • The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, abbreviated as AYUSH, is a governmental body in India purposed with developing, education and research in ayurveda (Indian traditional medicine), yoga, naturopathy, unani, siddha, and homoeopathy, Sowa-rigpa (Traditional Tibetan medicine), and other Indigenous Medicine systems.
  • The department was created in March 1995 as the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H).
  • AYUSH received its current name in March 2003. That time it was operated under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • The Ministry of AYUSH was formed with effect from 9 November 2014 by elevation of the Department of AYUSH.
  • Minister of state independent charge, Shripad Yasso Naik, he was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha from Panaji constituency in Goa.
