Jagmohan Dalmiya Passes away

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who has been known as the architect of BCCI, passed away in a private hospital in Kolkata on 20th September 2015. He was admitted to hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was admitted to the BM Birla Heart Research Centre . He was 75.

Novelist Jackie Collins passes away

Renowned novelist Jackie Collins  passes away due to breast cancer. She was 77. she died in Los Angeles after she was diagnosed with stage-four cancer six-and-a-half years ago on 19th September 2015. In a career spanning four decades, Collins sold more than 500 million books in 40 countries across the world.

September 21 – International day of Peace

The International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September every year. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All”.

China launches newly-developed smaller version Long March-6 carrier rocket

China  launched a new, smaller type of rocket from its “Long March” family on 20th September 2015. The Long March-6 is a carrier rocket which uses liquid propellant. It took off from a launch base in the northern province of Shanxi. China believe that the new model will also significantly improve their ability to access space.

Urdu scholar Shamim Hanfi awarded literary honour

Eminent Urdu litterateur Shamim Hanfi has been conferred with the prestigious Jnangarima Manad Alankaran by Bharatiya Jnanpith in New Delhi. The award was announced at the annual ‘Kavita Samay’ – an evening of poetry recitation by authors in both Hindi and Urdu. It was organised by the institution in August 2015 to commemorate 70 years of the institution.

GOI plans new body to crack down on child pornography

The GOI is planning to set up a highly sophisticated centre to tackle child pornography and online abuse. The initiative comes after an expert committee constituted to prepare a roadmap for effectively tackling cyber crime. According to the recommendations of the committee, there is a need to drastically reduce crimes against children and women, especially online abuse.

Sebastian Vettel wins Singapore Grand Prix

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won the Singapore Grand Prix and runaway championship leader Lewis Hamilton retired mid-race, injecting new life into the fight for the Formula One title. Vettel led from start to finish in a race that was temporarily interrupted by a fan wandering on the track. Vettel’s third win of the season came by 1.4 seconds over Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished third.

Greek leftist Alexis Tsipras stormed back into office with an unexpectedly decisive election victory, claiming a clear mandate to steer Greece’s battered economy to recovery. The vote ensured Europe’s most outspoken leftist leader would remain Greece’s dominant political figure, despite having been abandoned by party radicals.

Ola to invest $20 million on safety initiatives this year

Taxi-hailing app Ola will invest $20 million (more than Rs 130 crore) by March, 2016 on various initiatives to ensure passenger safety. The Bengaluru-based company has also introduced a new number masking feature on its app that does not disclose the customer’s mobile number to drivers.

BPCL all set to start work on Rs.5000-crore project

State-run oil refiner Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) is all set to start work on the petrochemicals complex in Kochi with all green clearances in place and securing a Rs.4,000-crore loan commitment from State Bank of India. The Rs.5,000-crore Kochi petrochemiclas project was announced in December 2011 as part of a Rs.20,000-crore expansion of the Kochi Refinery.

528th marriage anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev celebrated in Punjab

The 528th marriage anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh religion, was celebrated in this industrial town of Punjab amidst tight security. Hundreds of devotees participated in the religious procession which started from Gurudwara Dehra Sahib, where the marriage of Guru Nanak Dev was solemnized. The holy book Guru Granth Sahib was placed in a palanquin as the devotees showered flowers.

Richie Richardson inducted in ICC referees panel

Former West Indies captain Richie Richardson has been inducted into the Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, replacing Sri Lanka’s Roshan Mahanama who stepped down recently. Richardson is currently working as West Indies cricket team manager and he will hold that position till January 3, 2016. After that he will be formally included in the Elite Panel.

RIP – Lyricist Nizam, Leftist Leader Sadhan Gupta, Malayalam Singer Radhika Thilak

Noted Odia lyricist Nizam has passed away at a private hospital here after a prolonged illness at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Sadhan Gupta, the independent India’s first visually-challenged has died following age-related illness. The veteran Communist and eminent lawyer was 98 and is survived by four daughters and a son.

Renowned Malayalam playback singer Radhika Thilak passed away in Kochi on 20 September 2015 due to cancer. She was 45 years old. She sung around 70 songs for Malayalam movies including Guru, Ottayal Pattalam and Deepasthambham Mahashcharyam.

17 New UN development goals for 2030

The 193 member states of the United Nations in the coming days will adopt 17 new UN development goals to be achieved by 2030. The goals will be added to the world agenda at a global summit just before the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly.

NFAI launches competition to crowdsource Logo and Tagline for National Film Heritage Mission

The National Film Archive of India (NFAI) has launched the competition to crowdsource logo and tagline for the prestigious National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM). The NFAI seeks to crowdsource entries for the logo and tagline through Government of India’s MyGov portal and other social media platforms of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The last date for submission of entries is October 20, 2015.

Indian Wushu team wins 12 medals in International Tournament

The Indian wushu team has fetched a rich haul of one gold, four silver and seven bronze medals at the fifth International Pars Wushu Cup in Tehran. L. Budhachandra Singh won a gold medal in the 56 kg category, beating Masod Ansari of Iran in the final. MukeshChoudhry lost his final against Asian Games gold-medallist Mohsen Seifi, while Rajani Deori went down to Sajas Abbasi ofIran in the summit clash.

India and Pakistan hold Brigade Commander level flag meeting on LoC in J&K

The Brigade Commander level flag meeting between the Indian Army and Pakistani Army was held at Chakkan-Da-Bagh Cross LoC point in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Field commanders from both countries discussed about the volatile situation prevailing along the Line of Control, which has arisen due to the recent unprecedented spurt in incidents of ceasefire violations.
