  1. Akshaya Mukul wins Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize 2016

Senior journalist Akshaya Mukul has been awarded the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize for his book “Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India“. Judges and authors Samanth Subramanian, Mahesh Rao and Janice Pariat said they chose Mukul’s book for its “eye-opening and captivating exploration into a parallel literary culture that can often feel at a great remove from English-speaking metropolitan India.

  1. Infosys Science Foundation announces six 2016 Infosys Prize winners

Infosys Science Foundation has announced the coveted Infosys Prize 2016 and six achievers, including Professor V Kumaran of the department of chemical engineering at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, have emerged as winners. Kumaran won the prize in the Engineering and Computer Science category for making contributions in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary health.

  1. Radhika Menon awarded IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea

Captain Radhika Menon, Master of the oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya, is to receive the 2016 International Maritime Organization Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for her role in the dramatic rescue of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat in tumultuous seas in the Bay of Bengal in June last year. The International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.

  1. Pankaj Patel elected as FICCI President for 2017

Chairman and managing director of Cadila Healthcare LtdPankaj Patel has been elected president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) for 2017. Patel will take over from Harshavardhan Neotia, chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group, during the FICCI AGM to be held on 16 and 17 December in New Delhi. Established in 1927, FICCI, an association of business organizations, is regarded as one of the oldest and largest ones in the country.

  1. India’s longest expressway from Agra to Lucknow inaugurated

Agra-Lucknow expressway is India’s longest expressway till date, and with its inauguration on November 20, Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav hopes to project to the state that his government’s focus is on development. The 302-km long six-lane greenfield expressway is special on multiple counts – from the record time under which it has been completed, to the fact that it will drastically reduce the travel time between the two UP cities.

  1. India ranks 20th on Climate Change Performance Index

India has been ranked 20th on Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2017, which underlined that countries like India are making “great efforts” in the fields of renewables and energy efficiency. The publication was issued by German watch and Climate Action Network Europe. With the historic Paris Agreement having recently entered into force, the latest CCPI confirms a boost for renewable energy and positive developments in energy efficiency.

  1. Venkaiah Naidu opens Indian Panorama at IFFI 2016 in Goa

The 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2016 began at Panaji in Goa. Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the festival. Veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy was the Chief Guest.  It should expose the people to ideas, problems and developments happening in the society and make them think critically and look for alternate solutions and actions.

08. India becomes an Associate Member of CERN

India and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) signed an agreement on making India an associate member state of the research organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. The agreement was signed by Sekhar Basu, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and CERN Director General Fabiola Gianotti in Mumbai.

09. India successfully test-fires Agni-I ballistic missile

India  successfully test-fired its indigenously built nuclear capable Agni-I ballistic missile, which can hit a target 700 km away, as part of a user trial by Army from a test range off Odisha coast. The surface-to-surface missile, powered by solid propellants, was test-fired from a mobile launcher from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island).

10. Defence Minister Parrikar commissioned new warship INS Chennai

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar commissioned the newest indigenously-built destroyer INS Chennai into the force. This is a historic day for the Indian Navy,” Parrikar said, lauding the indigenously designed and constructed, Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer built by Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) in Mumbai.

11. EU offers tech expertise to India to combat air pollution

With Delhi and many other cities grappling with increasing pollution, the European Union has offered its best technical expertise to help India combat deteriorating air quality. Under the initiative, the EU will initially launch a project in three cities in January to help authorities come out with effective measures to reduce pollution. Many top European companies offering clean air solutions will be involved in the project.

OBITUARY

12. Irish novelist William Trevor dies aged 88

The Irish author William Trevorone of the greatest short story writers of the last century, has died at the age of 88. Trevor, the author of more than 15 novels and many more short stories, was shortlisted for the Man Booker prize four times, most recently for The Story of Lucy Gault in 2002, the same year he was awarded an honorary knighthood for his services to literature.

13.Padma Vibhushan awardee musician M Balamuralikrishna dies

Veteran Carnatic musician M Balamuralikrishna passed away in Chennai on November 22 the age of 86. The singer was native of Sankaraguptam, East Godavari District, and was born Murali Krishna. After his first concert at the age of 8, Musunuri Suryanarayana Murty Bhagavatar, a distinguished Harikatha performer, who was in attendance, gave the prefix ‘Bala’, and hence he became Balamuralikrishna.

14. PV Sindhu wins China Open

P V Sindhu becomes the second Indian to win the China Open Super series as she defeated China’s Sun Yu 21-11, 17-21, 21-11 to win the coveted title. The Indian badminton player was quick on her feet and used her speed and agility to beat her opponent in the first game. The only Indian woman to win the title before Sindhu was Saina Nehwal who won it in the year 2014.
