SBI gets $625 mn from World Bank for solar power
State Bank of India (SBI) and the World Bank have inked agreements for a $625 million (around Rs 4,200 crore) facility to support grid-connected rooftop solar programme (GRPV) in the country. This will help SBI in financing GRPV projects at competitive rates.
This will catalyse the market and support the government to faster achieve its target to generate 40 gigawatt (Gw) of electricity from the widespread installation of rooftop solar photo-voltaic panels. The eligible beneficiaries under the facility would be developers, aggregators and end-users, who wish to set up solar PV projects, mainly on commercial, industrial and institutional rooftops.

FSSAI inks MoU with ASCI to check misleading advertisements
Regulator FSSAI has joined hands with ASCI in its bid to check misleading advertisements in the food and beverages sector. Advertising Standard Council of India (ASCI) will comprehensively monitor the advertisements across various media. The council has been given a suo motu monitoring mandate by FSSAI to process complaints against misleading advertisements of food and beverages.

High-speed OPV INS Tarasa launched by Indian Navy
The last ship in the series of four Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (WJFAC) being built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) for the Indian Navy was launched. Christened INS Tarasa, after an island in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, the ship was launched by Aruna Korde, wife of Vice Admiral Jaywant Korde, the navy’s Controller of Logistics.
An improved variant of the Car Nicobar-class high-speed offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), INS Tarasa will be fitted out at the GRSE’s Raja Bagan Dockyard and handed over to the navy after sea trials.

Indian monuments to be made disabled-friendly
A new initiative by the culture and the social justice and empowerment ministries will soon make it easy for differently-abled visitors of prominent tourist places to access monument and artefacts without any discomfort. This initiative will cover 50 prominent monuments and make them disabled-friendly soon. Disabled-friendly facilities include wheelchairs, disabled-friendly toilets, Braille signages, tactile floors or pathways, railings and ramps.

RIMPAC 2016: World’s largest international maritime exercise kicks off
The multinational exercise Rim of the Pacific Southern California 2016 has kicked off, occurring in and around Southern California through Aug. 4. RIMPAC SOCAL, helmed for the first time by Naval Surface Mine Warfare Development Center (SMWDC), allows U.S. and partner nation participants to train together with sea and shore based commands. Participants will receive relevant and realistic training in amphibious operations, explosive ordnance disposal, mine warfare countermeasures and dive operations.

China builds world’s largest radio telescope
China has hoisted the final piece into position on what will be the world’s largest radio telescope, which it will use to explore space and help in the hunt for extraterrestrial life. The Five Hundred Metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, or Fast, is the size of 30 football fields and has been cut out of a mountain in the south-western province of Guizhou.
The telescope, which has taken about five years to build, is expected to begin operations in September. Advancing China’s space programme is a priority for Beijing, with President Xi Jinping calling for the country to establish itself as a space power.

Cyprus set to sign new tax treaty with India
India and Cyprus have agreed to revise their tax treaty under which capital gains tax will be levied on sale of shares on investments made after April 1, 2017, thus bringing the island nation at par with Mauritius in terms of tax treatment on investments. The new Cyprus Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), which has been agreed upon by both the countries, would provide for source-based taxation of capital gains on transfer of shares. As per an agreement reached between India and Cyprus on June 29, investments made prior to April 1, 2017, will be grandfathered.

Ministry grants recognition to Paralympic Committee of India
The Sports Ministry has granted recognition to Paralympic Committee of India, giving a huge confidence boost to the several para-athletes who have qualified for Rio Paralympics. The ministry’s move comes less than a month after the International Paralympic Committee announced temporary lifting of suspension imposed on the national body last year so that Indians can take part under the tri-colour in the showpiece event in September.

Amul to officially sponsor Indian contingent at Rio Olympics 2016
India’s largest food products marketing organization Amul has announced its sponsorship of the Indian contingent at the biggest multi-sport event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Being an avid supporter of various sporting events, Amul had earlier sponsored the Indian contingent at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

India to host world’s first MMA League
India will be hosting the world’s first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) ‘Super Fight League’ from August 26 to October 1. The franchise-based league will feature eight teams – Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Haryana, Bangalore, Punjab, Pune and Goa. The league will be a platform for Indian MMA players like Anup Kumar, CJ Singh, Amit Roy, Dhruv Chaudhary to showcase their skills. Each team will constitute nine Indian fighters and three international ones.

Lewis Hamilton wins Austrian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton collided with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg on the last lap before passing him to win a thrilling Austrian Grand Prix. The German turned into a corner late as Hamilton tried to pass around the outside and damaged his front wing, finishing fourth. Rosberg was given a 10-second penalty and two penalty points by stewards for causing a collision. It reduces Hamilton’s deficit to Rosberg to 11 points in the title race. Max Verstappen in a Red Bull was second and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari was third.

India set to host South Asian Basketball Qualifiers
The South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Zone Qualifying Round of the FIBA Asia Challenge 2016 will be held from July 6 to 8 at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium. The three-day competition will be played on a round robin league format. Four South Asian teams – defending champions and hosts India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the island nation of Maldives are in the fray.

Ex-MP Ranji player Kapil Seth passes away
Former Madhya Pradesh cricketer Kapil Seth has recently passed away. He was 36. According to the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA), the all-rounder was suffering from Hepatitis B. Seth, who represented the state in only one first-class and a List A game in the 2000-01 season, made his sole Ranji Trophy appearance against Vidarbha in November 2000,ESPNcricinfo reported.
Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel dies at 87
Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and author who fought for peace, human rights and simple human decency, has died at the age of 87. Wiesel, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, recounted his family being sent to the Nazi concentration camps in his first book, “Night,” which was published in France in 1958. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Wiesel as a “master of words.”
