PM Narendra Modi presents bravery awards to 25 children

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 24 presented the National Bravery Awards to 25 children. He congratulated the children along with their parents for their bravery to help “fellow human beings in distress”. He added that presence of mind, quick thinking, selfless determination and sensitivity for fellow human beings in distress were the most important elements of the acts of bravery of these children.

BANKING AND FINANCE

Banks to get 2.5 per cent commission under gold monetisation scheme

Government will pay banks a 2.5 per cent commission for mobilising gold under the gold monetisation scheme and depositors will be permitted premature withdrawal of the deposited metal. According to Finance Ministry, it is expected that the above modifications will make the scheme more attractive for potential depositors. Under the modified rules, government will pay the participating banks a fees for their services such as gold purity testing charges, refining, storage and transportation charges, among others, on medium and long term gold deposits.

January 24 – National Girl Child Day

National girl child day is celebrated every year on 24th of January as a national observance day for the girl child. This celebration was started to offer more supports and new opportunities to the girls in the country. It is celebrated to increase the awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society. Inequality about girl child is a vast problem which includes many areas like inequality in education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, protection, honour, child marriage and so many.

UM Motorcycle to unveil three variants of Renegade in India

UM Motorcycles  will make its debut at the Auto Expo 2016 on February 3, 2016. It is the Indian concern of an American company, UM International LLC. It will unveil its Renegade range of cruiser motorcycles – Renegade Sport S, Renegade Commando and Renegade Classic. UM Motorcycles stand for design, innovation and quality all at affordable prices. The motorcycle comes with wide handlebars and hydraulic telescopic front suspension and spring rear suspension, which is ideal for a cruiser-segment motorcycle. The Renegade Sport S model and Renegade Classic will also share the same engine as the Renegade Commando. The Renegade Sport S was much appreciated when it was showcased at the 2015 EICMA in Milan.

Parrikar hoists highest tricolour at Ranchi

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on January 23 hoisted the largest Tricolour on the country’s tallest flag post at Pahari Mandir in Ranchi. The event also coincided with the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

PM Narendra Modi, Presient Hollande visit government museum, gallery in Chandigarh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Hollande on January 24 visited the Government Museum and Art Gallery after French President arrived India on a three-day official visit to India. Visit to the Government museum is an example of Indo-French collaboration in historical & archaeological work. Located in the heart of the city which was designed by French architect Le Corbusier, the museum and the gallery houses part of the collection of art objects, paintings, sculptures and decorative arts that were kept in the Central Museum, Lahore, the then capital of Punjab, prior to Partition in 1947.

Delhiites can pick up your online purchases from nearest metro station

In coming month, Delhiites would be picking up their products from Delhi Railway station itself. They can now collect them according to their convenience. If you are not at home to pick your ordered products, you can can ask the portals to have the products delivered at designated Metro terminals from where they can collect them during travel. Metro authorities declined to name any e-commerce sites, several of which have come up and grown increasingly popular in recent times, saying the details were being worked out.

Chanderpaul ends 22-year international career

Veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the seventh highest Test match run maker in history, has announced his international retirement, 22 years after his debut. The 41-year-old former captain from Guyana ends his Test career on 11,867 runs, just 86 short of the West Indies all-time record held by Brian Lara. Chanderpaul, a gritty and stubborn left-handed batsman made his debut against England in March 1994, in his native Guyana, where he made a half-century, as West Indies won by an innings and 44 runs.

Sourav Kothari pockets National Billiards title

Kolkata cueist Sourav Kothari put up a dominating display on the green baize to outplay Siddharth Parekh 5-2 in the final of the National Billiards Championship. Bagging his second National Billiards title, he won his maiden crown in 2014, Kothari started with a bang to win four straight frames in the best-of-nine frame (150-up each) summit clash.  The former Asian Billiards champion had three 100-plus breaks in the first four frames to unsettle Parekh, who was playing his first National Billiards final.

Prince Narula finally won the Bigg Boss 9. The final winner defeated  Rishabh Sinha, Mandana Karimi and Rochelle Rao. Being favorite among audience, this man makes it to the final list and consequently won also. He has also been the winner of Roadies and Splitsvilla. Keeping his track record on mind, he with no doubt is the Prince who never fails to fulfill his duties as the king and performs his tasks with full strength and mind.

Rohit Sharma claims career-best fifth spot in ICC batting chart

India’s Rohit Sharma jumped eight spots to claim a career-best fifth position in the ICC batsman ranking. He clinched this position after showing his stellar performance in the recently concluded series against top-ranked Australia. Man of the Series Rohit, who registered 441 runs in the five matches, struck two centuries and a match-winning 99 in the consolation win for the visitors, who lost the series 1-4.

P V Sindhu clinches Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title

India’s P V Sindhu clinched the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title. She is a two-time World Championship bronze-medallist. She defeated Scotland’s Kristy Gilmour in straight games in the final on January 24. The third seeded Indian had lost to Gilmour in 2013 French Open. But now she showed why she is considered to be one of India’s most revered women’s singles shuttler as she avenged her loss with a dominating 21-15 21-9 win in a 32-minute clash to clinch her fifth Grand Prix Gold title.

Finance Ministry approves buying 14 lakh new EVMs

The Finance Ministry gave in-principle approval for buying nearly 14 lakh new electronic voting machines(EVMs). The Election Commission has moved a step forward towards procuring new devices which are required ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In its January 18 meeting, the Expenditure Finance Committee headed by Secretary Expenditure in the Finance Ministry, gave in-principle approval for the purchase of 13,95,648 new balloting units and 9,30,432 control units at an estimated cost of Rs 5,511.48 crore between financial years 2015-16 and 2018-19.

OBITUARY

Social Worker Nirmala Gajwani passes away

Reputed social worker and one of the leading lights of the Sindhi community, Nirmala Gajwani, passed away. She was 87. Born in Rohri Sindh (now in Pakistan) on December 28 1928, she married Dr. Hassanand Gajwani at 16 and, due to the partition of India and Pakistan, was forced to flee as a refugee with her 10-month old infant son in 1947. The first few years in India were difficult but some stashed gold ornaments allowed the family to survive till her husband found a job as a government medical officer in a remote, desolate town of Bachau in Kutch.
