Why we celebrate Indian Army Day on January 15?

Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 in recognition of Lieutenant General Kodendara Madappa Cariappa’s taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher. Butcher was the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.

Indian Army Day marks a day to salute the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and the people living in it.

How we celebrate Indian Army Day?

Indian Army Day is celebrated at all the Army Headquarters and National capital with Army parades and military shows. The celebration includes paying tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives at “Amar Jawan Jyoti” at India gate New Delhi.

Who is K.M.Cariappa? 
  • KM Cariappa was born on 28 January 1899.
  • He was the first Commander in chief of Indian Army. Kipper was his nickname.
  • He served on World War – II and Indo – Pakistani War.
  • He was awarded Order of the British Empire, three times in mentioned in dispatches and Legion of Merit.
  • After retirement he founded Indian Ex – Servicemen League (IESL) in 1964.
  • He died on 15 May 1993.
