Pachauri becomes TERI’s Executive Vice Chairman

Former chief of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) RK Pachauri has been appointed executive vice-chairman of the organisation despite an ongoing inquiry in a sexual harassment case against him. The post was recently created for Pachauri. Ajay Mathur, former chief of Bureau of Energy Efficiency, has been appointed director general of Teri, the position held by Pachauri until the harassment complaint was filed by a junior colleague last year. Pachauri, who was also chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, had resigned as IPCC head following the FIR.

Chettinad Cotton Saree wins Indian Handloom tag

The Union textile ministry has bestowed the ‘Indian Handloom Brand’ tag on Chettinad cotton saris, which would enable them to promote the material in the international market. This will give a big boost to a group of 650 weavers from Koviloor and Karaikudi in Sivaganga district. The Ministry authorised the Amarar Rajiv Gandhi Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society, which produced the sarees, to use the brand and logo for marketing the product.

Ratan Tata invests in Invictus Oncology

Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, has invested an undisclosed amount in Delhi-based biopharmaceutical firm Invictus Oncology Pvt Ltd, next generation cancer therapeutic startup. The investment in Invictus Oncology is Tata’s fifth in 2016, and follows the Tata Sons patriarch’s investments in startup research platform Tracxn, pet care portal DogSpot, baby and maternity care online retailer FirstCry, as well as in cash-back and coupons venture, CashKaro, all four of which were announced in January.

IRCTC ties up with tea cafe chain ‘Chaayos’

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) entering into a tie up with leading tea cafe chain Chaayos. The partnership with Chaayos will ensure that passengers get their tea and snacks delivered to their train seats directly. Initially, the collaboration is for all trains at New Delhi station, and will soon be extended to other stations across Delhi and Mumbai. Chaayos co-founder Raghav Verma said the partnership with IRCTC would be a great chance for people to get their favourite cup of tea even while travelling in trains. Chaayos, which has 20 cafes in Delhi NCR and Mumbai, will offer many of its customized tea options such as Kulhad Chai, Adrak Tulsi Chai and Honey Ginger Lemon.

ISRO to partner with Delhi Police to track crime

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will enter into a partnership with Delhi Police, in which it will help develop a mechanism to facilitate “predictive policing” and “live crime mapping”. The system will provide real-time information from crime spots and identify gang activities. Personal Digital Assistant devices will be given to officials, that can store data of over two lakh criminals.

UN Panel proposes emission standards for flights

A UN panel has proposed long-sought greenhouse gas emissions standards for airliners and cargo planes. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) said the agreement reached by the agency’s environmental panel requires new aircraft designs meet the standards beginning in 2020, and that designs already in production comply by 2023. There is also a cutoff date of 2028 for the manufacture of planes that don’t comply with the standards. The standard must still be adopted by the agency’s 36-nation governing council, but substantive changes aren’t expected.

Military Exercise Surya Kiran IX commences

The 14 day Indo-Nepal Combined Military Exercise Surya Kiran IX at general area, Pithoragarh commenced on 08 February 2016 and will culminate on 21 February 2016. A combined Ceremonial Parade was held by both the participating contingents. The Nepal Army is being represented by officers and troops of the elite Shree Rudra Dhoj Battalion while an Infantry Battalion is participating on behalf of Indian Army. The Combined Battalion Level Exercise is being conducted under the aegis of Panchshul Brigade of Central Command.

Sapna Devi and Joshna Chinappa win gold medal at SAG

India continued to dominate on the second day of the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) with Sapna Devi winning gold in the women’s Wushu Taolu (Changquan) competition. Sapna scored 9.45 points to emerge as the winner while the silver went to Susmita Tamang of Nepal who had a score of 8.72. Pakistan’s Nazia Parvaiz took the bronze with a score of 6:30 points.

OBITUARY

Veteran poet Nida Fazli dies aged 78

Renowned Urdu and Hindi poet Nida Fazli has died in Mumbai at the age of 78. Born in Delhi on October 12, 1938 and raised in Gwalior, his original name was Mukhtda Hassan Nija Fazli. Poet Nida Fazli passed away after suffering from a heart attack. Nida Fazli began writing from an early age and after completing his graduation in Gwalior, he settled in Delhi. Fazli is especially known for his association with the late ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.

Former Nepal PM Sushil Koirala dies aged 79

Former Prime Minister of Nepal and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala passed away due to Pneumonia at the age of 79. Koirala, who was elected Prime Minister of Nepal on February 10, 2014, died at his residence in Maharajgunj in the outskirt of capital Kathmandu. He had returned from the U.S. after undergoing a successful treatment for the lung cancer and is credited with promulgating the new constitution of Nepal in September last year.
