Titli wins Best First Foreign Film Award

Indian filmmaker Kanu Behl directorial “Titli” has bagged the Best First Foreign Film Award conferred by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics 2016 (FSCC). This is the first time an Indian film has won this award. The film, co-produced by Dibakar Banerjee Productions Pvt Ltd and Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films, features actors Ranvir Shorey, Amit Sial, Shashank Arora, Lalit Behl and Shivani Raghuvanshi in the lead roles.

Amitabh Bachchan gets lifetime achievement award

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been presented with the lifetime achievement award at NDTV Indian of the Year Awards.  Jaya, who has worked with Amitabh in films like “Chupke Chupke”, “Abhimaan”, “Mili” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”, said she always knew her husband would make it big one day. Abhishek said Big B is the world’s best father and that is what matters to him more than anything else. Amitabh started his career in 1969 film “Saat Hindustani” followed by “Anand”, “Guddi”, “Zanjeer”, “Sholay” among others. He also made his Hollywood debut with Baz Luhrmann’s film “The Great Gatsby”, in which he played a Jewish character.  The “Wazir” star will be next seen in Sujoy Ghosh-produced “TE3N” opposite Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Urban Ladder appoints Sanjay Gupta as CMO

Online furniture store Urban Ladder has named former Marico Ltd executive Sanjay Gupta as its chief marketing officer. Gupta will lead marketing, branding and content among others at Urban Ladder, the company said in a statement. Gupta has previously worked with Accenture Plc and consulting firm Purple Squirrel Consulting LLP. Founded in 2012, Urban Ladder is one of the early movers in the online furniture segment along with Rocket Internet-backed Fabfurnish, and Pepperfry, which is run by Trendsutra Platform Services Pvt. Ltd.

RBI eases cross border transactions for start ups

The Reserve Bank of India has proposed steps to improve ease of doing business for start-ups through easier access to foreign capital and by enabling smoother transfer of ownership. RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said the central bank wants to simplify the process and will create an enabling framework for attracting foreign venture capital (VC). For easing cross-border transactions, RBI has proposed that in case of transfer of ownership of a start-up, permitting receipt of the consideration amount on a deferred basis could be done. It has also proposed to enable escrow arrangement or indemnity arrangement up to a period of 18 months.

Infosys to build the World’s tallest Clock Tower

Infosys, India’s leading software company, is all set to beat the 96-metre tall Big Ben, the iconic free-standing clock tower in London, with a 135m structure. The proposed clock tower, which will be built in the Infosys Global Education Center in Mysore, close to the country’s tech capital Bangalore, will also rival the Hoover Tower (87m) in California and the McGraw Tower (53m) in Cornell.

Vietnam gets world’s longest cable car system

The world’s longest three-rope cable car system was inaugurated in Vietnam’s Lao Cai province. With a total length of 6,292.5 metres, the system was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest three-rope cable car route, and also the world’s biggest height gap between its departure and arrival stations of 1,410 metres.

NIIF signed MoU with RUSNANO OJSC of Russia

National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) has signed an MoU with RUSNANO OJSC of Russia to cooperate in diverse sectors and facilitate high-technology investments in India. As per the MoU, both the Parties will establish a joint working group with a view to further develop cooperation between the Parties and work on the development of the definitive agreements.

India and Brunei Ink 3 Agreements

India and Brunei have decided to boost defence ties by conducting joint military exercises as the two countries signed three agreements after Vice President Hamid Ansari held talks with the top leadership.  The Vice President, who is on the first high-level trip from India since the establishment of diplomatic ties with resource-rich Brunei, witnessed the signing of the agreements in the field of health, and youth and sports affairs, besides defence.

OBITUARY

Former RBI Deputy Governor SS Tarapore passes away

SS Tarapore, former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and a noted economist, has passed away in Mumbai, at the age of 80. Tarapore joined the RBI in 1961 and retired in 1996 as deputy governor, having been involved in almost all aspects of monetary policy. He served as RBI deputy governor between 1992 and 1996 when C. Rangarajan was the governor. This was a period of rapid change for the Indian economy, with the government having introduced economic reforms in 1991.

Veteran Pakistani writer Intizar Husain dies at 93

Intizar Husain, veteran Urdu short story writer, poet and journalist has passed away at the age of 93. Husain’s books include ‘Gali Koochay’, ‘Kankari’, ‘Din Aur Dastan’, ‘Shehr-i-afsos’, ‘Kachhuay’, ‘Khaimay Say Door’, ‘Khali Pinjra’, ‘Morenama’ and ‘Sheharzad Kay Naam’.

Veteran Congress leader Balram Jakhar passes away

Veteran Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar passed away at the age of 92. The former Lok Sabha Speaker and Governor of Madhya Pradesh was ailing for over a year following a brain stroke. He suffered respiratory arrest last month. Jakhar served as Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1989 during which he contributed to the establishment of Parliament museum. He also served as agriculture minister in the Cabinet of former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. Jakhar also served as governor of Madhya Pradesh from June 30, 2004 to May 30, 2009.
