1.One-person judicial panel to look into OROP implementation

The Defence ministry formed a one-person judicial panel to look into the  implementation of One Rank, One Pension scheme (OROP). Former Cheif  Justice of Patna High Court L Narasimha Reddy, will head the committee and will give his recommendations with in six months.

The veterans who protested against the “diluted” OROP, however, rejected the move. They said they wanted a five-member committee to be constituted, with three of their representatives, which should submit its report within a month.The committee will also look into measures for removal of anomalies that may arise out of inter-services issues of the Army, Navy and IAF, implications on service matters and any other matter referred to it.

2.India ranks 130th in Human Development Index: UNDP

India has been ranked 130 in the latest report of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Human Development Index. India has climbed  five spots up to 130 in a list of 188 countries for the year 2014. The 2015 Global Human Development Report was named “Work for Human Development”, was released in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Norway topped followed by Australia and Switzerland. As per the report, the HDI rank of Bangladesh and Pakistan was 142 and 147, respectively.  Between 1980 and 2014, India’s HDI value increased from 0.326 to 0.609,which is below the average of 0.630 for countries in the medium human development group and above the average of 0.607 for countries in South Asia. Among the BRICS nations, India was ranked lowest.

3.LS passes bill to allow NPCIL to have tie-ups with other PSUs

Lok Sabha passed a bill that will allow state-run NPCIL to have collaboration with other PSUs in the nuclear field. The government has allayed the fears that it will facilitate FDI into the sector or allow participation of a private company in atomic power production. The Atomic Energy Amendment Bill 2015 proposes to amend the 1962 Atomic Energy Act to change the definition of “government company” in the Act with a view to expand its scope by including such joint venture companies as may be formed between NPCIL and other PSUs, according to the statement of object and reasons.

At present, only two Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) — Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Bhartiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI), which are under the administrative control of Department of Atomic Energy, operate nuclear power plants in the country.

4.Violinist Itzhak Perlman awarded 2016 Genesis Prize

Israeli-American violinist Itzhak Perlman has been awarded  the Jewish Nobel 2016 for his accomplishments as a musician, teacher and advocate for the disabled. The Genesis Prize is given each year to an individual who has achieved professional success, contributed to humanity and shown a strong commitment to Jewish causes and the state of Israel. The $1 million prize, launched in 2014 and dubbed by Time magazine as “the Jewish Nobel,” is awarded by the Genesis Prize Foundation.

5.Saudi Arabia announces 34-state Islamic military alliance against terrorism

Saudi Arabia has announced the formation of a 34-state Islamic military alliance to combat terrorism. A long list of Arab countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, together with Islamic countries Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and Gulf Arab and African states were mentioned. Shi’ite Muslim Iran, Sunni Saudi Arabia’s arch rival for influence in the Arab world, was absent from the states named as participants, as proxy conflicts between the two regional powers rage from Syria to Yemen.

The United States has been increasingly outspoken about its view that Gulf Arab states should do more to aid the military campaign against the Islamic State militant group based in Iraq and Syria. In a rare press conference, 30-year-old deputy crown prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman told reporters that the campaign would “coordinate” efforts to fight terrorism in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan, but offered few concrete indications of how military efforts might proceed.

6.Rajasthan becomes the first state to submit smart city plan

Rajasthan has become the first state to submit Smart City plan to the Urban Development Ministry. Manjit Singh, Principal Secretary (urban development) of Rajasthan submitted Smart City proposals of three cities – Udaipur, Kota and Ajmer to UD Additional Secretary Samir Sharma at Nirman Bhawan. Investment outlays proposed for developing these three cities as smart cities are Kota – Rs 1,493 cr, Ajmer – Rs 1,300 cr and Udaipur – Rs 1,221 cr. Smart City proposal for Jaipur will be submitted later in the evening. Investment proposed for Jaipur is Rs 2,403 cr.

7.Pakistan test-fires nuclear capable Shaheen-1A

Pakistan has successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile Shaheen-1A with a range of 900 kilometres. The Shaheen-1A ballistic missile was fired from an undisclosed location with impact in the Arabian Sea. The launch was witnessed by senior officers from the Strategic Plans Division, strategic forces, scientists and engineers of strategic organizations. Director General Strategic Plans Division, Lieutenant General Mazhar Jamil, congratulated scientists and engineers for the successful launch.

8.Anirban Lahiri wins Order of Merit crown of Asian Tour

Anirban Lahiri wins Order of Merit crown of Asian tour for the year 2015 in Sentosa, Singapore. With this he became the Fourth Indian Golfer to win the title after Jeev Milkha Singh (2006, 2008), Arjun Atwal (2003) and Jyoti Randhawa (2002).World No. 41 Lahiri with earnings of $1,139,084  enjoys a huge lead over second-placed Scott Hend of Australia, who has accumulated $491,631.

The pertinacious Indian won the Maybank Malaysian Open and Hero Indian Open Earlier in 2015 and recorded to five other top-10 around the world. He has won seven Asian tour title and Eleven Professional golf tour of India title earlier in is life.

9.Mahindra group acquired Italian auto design firm Pininfarina

The India based Multinational company, Mahindra group has acquired the Italian auto design firm Pininfarina SpA on Decemeber 2015. Tech Mahindra and Mahindra & Mahindra have jointly signed this agreement. The all cash deal of this acquisition is expected to be nearly 65 million US dollars.

10.Operation Smile-II to start from 1 January 2016

Union Government on 14 December 2015 requested the states and Union Territories (UT) to start Operation Smile-II from 1 January 2016. The operation will end on 31 January 2016.

In this regard, the Union Home Secretary, Rajiv Mehrishi has written a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories for participation in Operation Smile-II in their respective State/UT.

Operation Smile-II is a campaign to rescue/rehabilitate the missing children. It is a follow up of the exercise Operation Smile that helped in rescuing and rehabilitating 9146 missing children.
