Veteran Australian Keeper Brad Haddin Retires

Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has announced his retirement from cricket, following Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Chris Rogers in stepping down in the wake of the Ashes series defeat. Haddin played his last match in the opening Test of the recently concluded Ashes series against England in Cardiff in July.

Cabinet approved Sovereign Gold Bonds and Gold Monetization Schemes

Sovereign Gold Bonds Scheme

The scheme will help in reducing the demand for physical gold by shifting a part of the estimated 300 tons of physical bars and coins purchased every year for Investment into gold bonds.

Gold Monetization Schemes (GMS)

The main objective of introducing the modifications in the schemes is to make the existing schemes more effective. GMS would benefit the Indian gems and jewellery sector which is a major contributor to India’s exports.

The existing Gold Deposit Scheme (GDS) and the Gold Metal Loan (GML) Scheme have been revamped.

DMRC finally cleared for Kerala’s Light Metro project

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has announced that the state government has cleared the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as the implementing agency and given administrative sanction for the proposed Light Metro project in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. The project is expected to ease the traffic in the busy capital city and Kozhikode. ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan, advisor to DMRC, would be overseeing the project.

J Manjula becomes DRDO’s first Woman Director General

The Defence Research and Development Organisation, India’s top defence technology research and development centre, has appointed J Manjula as the Director General, Electronics and Communication Systems cluster. She has assumed charge from distinguished scientist and Director General Dr KD Nayak, who was holding Additional charge as Director General, Electronic & Communication Systems, DRDO.

Haryana Government bans gutka and pan masala

Haryana’s Health Minister Anil Vij has announced that the state government has completely banned the manufacturing and sale of gutka and pan masala, and other similar products containing tobacco. The ban also includes mix of other ingredients such as heavy metals and anti-caking agents, except to the extent of specifically permitted ingredients, silver leaf, binders, flavours, scents and fragrances.

Approval of National Offshore Wind Energy Policy

The Union Cabinet approved National Offshore Wind Energy Policy which will provide a way to the development of this renewable source of energy, including setting up of projects and research in the area. The policy will provide a level playing field to all investors/beneficiaries, domestic and international. The policy will help the country move forward towards attaining energy security.

Cabinet increases DA by 6% for central govt employees

Cabinet increased dearness allowance (DA) by 6% i.e from 113% to 119 per cent. The DA hike will take effect from July 1. As per the agreed formula, the DA rate increase is an average of 12-month consumer price index-industrial workers from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. DA is paid as proportion of the basic pay.

It is based on the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission. This move will benefit 48 lakh government employees and 55 lakh pensioners.

Center to give 33 % reservation to women in all para-military forces

Union home minister Rajnath Singh announced 33 per cent reservations would be provided for women in all paramilitary forces, including Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Cabinet allows 100 per cent FDI under automatic route for white label ATM

In order to promote Financial Inclusion, the Union Cabinet has permitted 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) under the automatic route for white label ATM operations. The decision was taken in the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Till date, foreign investment in while label ATM operations (WLAO) was allowed through the government approval route. This required some processing time and projects were delayed.

President confers Gandhi Peace Prize 2014 to ISRO

President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2014 to Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The President congratulated the Indian Space community on ISRO being awarded the coveted Gandhi Peace Prize. ISRO Chairman AS Kiran Kumar received the honour, which includes Rs 1 crore in cash, a plaque, and a citation.




Parrikar commissions naval missile base INS Vajrakosh at Karwar

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has commissioned INS Vajrakosh, the latest establishment of the Indian Navy at Karwar in Karnataka. This will serve as a missile storage and replenishment facility for warships operating in the Western Coast. Constructed by DRDO at the most strategic location in the West Coast, the naval missile base will store the long-range BrahMos missiles and armaments.

India, Indonesia sign pact to cooperate on criminal matters

India and Indonesia have signed a pact for repatriation of each other’s wanted prisoners and cooperate in all criminal matters, including gathering evidence.

Under the agreement, India will execute summons to an accused person or to any person requiring to attend and produce documents or a search-warrant issued by an Indonesian court. Indonesia will reciprocate with similar action if there is any request from any Indian court.

Cabinet clears spectrum trading guidelines

The Cabinet has cleared spectrum trading guidelines under which telecom operators will be able to sell radiowaves to other service providers, a move that will help address the problem of spectrum shortage. As of now only government is allowed to allocate spectrum to telecom firms through auctions. The decision move is expected to increase efficient use of radiowaves by enabling telecom operators, who have a low subscriber base or unutilised spectrum lying with them, to trade in radiowaves.

Amazon opens seven new fulfilment centres in India

To beef up its logistics operations ahead of the festive season, global online retailer Amazon said it has set up seven new fulfilment centres (FCs) across cities like Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Gurgaon and Pune.

The FCs are warehouses where sellers can stock their inventory. They can save money by replacing their upfront capital expense with low variable cost and pay only for the storage space they use and the orders Amazon fulfils.

HCL group to invest $1 billion in Tamil Nadu

The Rs 45,000 crore HCL group will be investing around $1 billion in Tamil Nadu over the next five years and is also going into robotics and artificial intelligence. HCL will spread its operations in Madurai and Tirunelvelli districts while expanding its operations in Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu is important for the HCL group as around 35,000 employees out of total 110,000 are in the state. The group has operations in Chennai and Coimbatore.
