Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain’s longest-reigning monarch

Queen Elizabeth II has surpassed her great-great Grand Mother Queen Victoria’s record as the UK’s longest serving monarch. Queen Elizabeth II has now reigned over Britain and the Commonwealth for 63 years and 217 days. The queen has been on the throne since she was 25.

Railways to invest $140 billion, Japan to modernize stations

Japan has agreed to modernize railway stations across India while participating in the country’s $140 billion investment plan in the Railways over the next five years. A Japanese delegation will soon visit India to study the opportunities. The public transporter has identified 400 stations to be upgraded in private investment.

Ahmadabad air judged among most dusty in the country

Ahmadabad air judged as the most dusty among 13 cities in the country. These cities air quality index (AQI) is measured daily by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). According to the recorded AQI, particulate matter levels in Hyderabad and Kanpur were almost that of Ahmadabad.

BSNL plans to launch 4G services by March

State run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to unveil cheaper tariff plans by the end of this year and launch full-fledged 4G services by March 2016. BSNL will launch competitive tariff plans to match Reliance Jio and other private telecom service providers. Jio has announced launch of 4G services by the end of the year.

OSCB begins ‘Banks on Wheels’ service in remote areas

The Odisha State Cooperative Bank Limited (OSCB) on 9th September 2015 launched ‘Banks of Wheels’ scheme in 20 backward blocks covering 16 districts. The ‘Banks on Wheels’ by the OSCBL is the first of its kind facility in the country.The main aim of the scheme is to reach the farmers and other people in remote areas of the state.

India among the worst place to grow old- Report

India stood at 71 among 96 countries and has been termed as the worst place for older people. Switzerland has cliched the best place in the world for older people to live. The readings were given by Global AgeWatch Index 2015 compiled by HelpAge. The top five Countries are:

  1. Switzerland
  2. Norway
  3. Sweden
  4. Germany
  5. Canada

Indian-Origin Boy Sweeps Australian Spelling Bee Contest

Anirudh Kathirvel, a nine-year-old Indian-origin boy is Australia’s new spelling champion after he won the 50,000 dollars ‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee competition. Anirudh, born in Melbourne to a Tamilian couple won 50,000 dollars education scholarship along with an impressive 10,000 dollars’ worth goods for his school.

PM Modi inaugurates 10th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the three-day 10th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan (World Hindi Conference) in Bhopal. The conference is being organised by the ministry of external affairs in cooperation with the Madhya Pradesh government. The World Hindi Conference that is being held in India after a gap of 32 years.

Japan evacuates 100,000 as floods swamp city of Joso

Japan has evacuated about 100,000 people from their homes, after rare torrential rains unleashed floods. Some people are reported to be missing. A further 800,000 people across eastern Japan have been advised to evacuate after officials issued predawn warnings of unusually harsh rainfall.

Highest number of tourists arrived on e-Tourist Visa from USA during Jan-Aug 2015

Government of India launched Tourist Visa on Arrival (TVoA) enabled by Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), presently known as e-Tourist Visa scheme on 27th November 2014. At present e-Tourist Visa facility is available for citizens of 113 countries (including 36 countries for which the facility was extended on 15th August, 2015) arriving at 16 Airports in India (includes 7 airports added from 15th August, 2015).

During January- August, 2015 a total of 1,69,976 tourist arrived on e-Tourist Visa as compared to 17,120 during January-August, 2014 registering a growth of 892.9% .
