  1. Hyderabad airport bags energy efficiency award

Hyderabad International Airport Ltd has bagged the National Award for ‘Excellence’ in Energy Management at a conference hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) is a company promoted as a joint venture comprising the GMR Group (63%) in partnership with Government of India (13%), Government of Telangana (13%) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (11%).

The event focused on recognizing companies that are engaged in energy efficiency initiatives and displaying commitment towards energy conservation.

  1. Karnataka Govt. Launches Unified Health Scheme ‘Arogya Bhagya’

The Karnataka cabinet has  approved a universal health coverage (UHC) scheme aimed at providing free medical assistance to 14 million households.

Called Aarogya Bhagya (free healthcare), it’s the latest in a long list of populist schemes offered by the Congress-led state government including free rice to needy households and free milk to school students.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah’s populist push is aimed at winning over socially and economically backward classes ahead of next year’s state assembly elections.

  1. Wellness Centre under CGHS launched in Kohima

In a first of its kind in Nagaland, a Wellness Centre under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) has been officially launched in Kohima on Monday by Senior Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dhiren Engti.

With the inclusion of Kohima city, 33 cities are being covered under the CGHS. CGHS provides comprehensive medical facilities to all eligible central government employees, pensioners and other stakeholders, residing in areas covered under the Scheme.

  1. Punjab to be ‘Corneal Blindness Backlog Free State’ by Dec 31: Minister

Punjab Health and Family welfare Minister Brahm Mahindra on Monday said that Health department has set a target to make Punjab Corneal Blindness Backlog Free State by 31st December this year.

In a bid to achieve this target ‘Eye Donation Fortnight’ is being celebrated in all districts of state and around 1000 persons have pledged to donate their eyes so far.

  1. Gurgaon to get 1,000 new e-ricks at 5 Metro stations

To aid safe last-mile connectivity in Gurgaon, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in collaboration with Smart-E company will launch 1,000 e-rickshaws at five metro stations across the city on Monday.

Smart-E is uniquely poised to address the last-mile connectivity challenge faced by millions of people every day.

The launch of 1,000 e-rickshaws in exclusive partnership with DMRC is an important step towards making last-mile commute easy, safe, affordable and eco-friendly for the citizens.

  1. President Ram Nath Kovind to Visitgujarat on September 4, to Launch Projects

President Ram Nath Kovind would visit Jasdan town of Rajkot district on September 4 to launch some projects and attend various programmes, officials said.

President Ramnath Kovind will today lay the foundation stone for the link – 4 of Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation Scheme-SAUNI- Yojanain Rajkot district.

The project launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat aims to fill up 115 major dams by diverting overflow of water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam on Narmada River.

Three phase of SAUNI Yojana already dedicated to the people following completion of the work.

  1. RBI includes HDFC Bank in ‘too big to fail’ list along with SBI, ICICI

RBI on Monday included HDFC Bank in the list of ‘too big to fail’ lenders, referred to as D-SIB or domestic systemically important bank. India’s largest lender SBI and private sector major ICICI Bank were classified as D-SIBs in 2015.

With the inclusion of HDFC Bank in the list, there will now be three ‘too big to fail’ financial entities in the country. SIBs are subjected to higher levels of supervision so as to prevent disruption in financial services in the event of any failure.

The additional Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) requirement for D-SIBs has already been phased-in from April 1, 2016 and will become fully effective from April 1, 2019.

  1. Fincare Small Finance Bank Starts Banking Operations

Fincare Small Finance Bank (previously known as Disha Microfin Limited) kick-started its banking operations with about 25 operational branches across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The bank was given final small finance bank (SFB) licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in May this year. On the day of its launch, the bank raised over Rs 225 crore of deposits from its about 1000-odd depositors.

This forms about 15 per cent of the bank’s existing balance sheet of Rs 2000 crore, which includes Rs 1,350 crore as loans and advances, Rs 450 crore as investments besides the deposits.

  1. 9th BRICS Summit Kicks Off In Xiamen, China

The 9th BRICS Summit has started in Xiamen, China with a group photograph of leaders of the five countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and was preceded by a warm handshake between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Modi was the third leader to reach the convention center, venue of the 9th BRICS Summit in this port city of China and was followed by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

  1. State of emergency declared in Los Angeles

A state of emergency has been declared in Los Angeles as the city battles the worst wildfires in its history.

Hundreds of homes have been evacuated around the Glendale and Burbank suburbs. The fires, covering about 5,000 acres, started in La Tuna Canyon and have sent plumes of smoke over the city. At least three homes have already been destroyed and a major road, the 210 Freeway, closed.

  1. Konsam Ormila Devi bags gold at Commonwealth Youth weightlifting C’ship

India’s Konsam Ormila Devi bagged a gold medal in 44kg weight category on the opening day of the Commonwealth Youth (boys & girls) weightlifting championships, held at Gold Coast, Australia.

Ormila lifted 57kg in snatch and 76kg in clean and jerk for an overall effort of 133kg, to finish on the top of the podium. With this effort, Ormila has registered her best lift so far.

  1. World Chess Cup: Viswanathan Anand wins, Harikrishna suffered defeat

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand started off with a clinical victory over Li Tian Yeoh of Malaysia in the first round of the first game of World Chess Cup in Tbilisi.

The second highest rated Indian, P Harikrishna, however suffered a defeat at the hands of Yuri Vidal Gonzales of Cuba.

Harikrishan now needs to win the return match and then win the tie-breaker as well to remain in this 128-player knockout event.

  1. Pulitzer-Prize Winning Poet John Ashbery Passes Away

John Ashbery, a poet whose teasing, delicate, soulful lines made him one of the most influential figures of late-20th and early-21st-century American literature, died.

Mr. Ashbery’s early work was mostly known in avant-garde circles, but his arrival as a major figure in American literature was signaled in 1976, when he became the only writer to win the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award in the same year, for his collection “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror.”

  1. TMC MP & former Central Minister Sultan Ahmed passes away

Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament and former Central Minister Sultan Ahmed passed away in Kolkata on Monday morning following a cardiac arrest.

He was 64. The West Bengal chief minister and Trimool Congress supremo has expressed profound grief and sorrow at Sultan Ahmed’s death.
