1. New Chief Justices appointed for high courts of Kerala, Chhattisgarh, MP, and Jharkhand

  • Chief justices were appointed to the high courts of Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.
  • Justice Navniti Prasad, a judge in the Patna High Court has been appointed Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
  • Justice T B Radhakrishnan, acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court has been sent as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
  • Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court Hemant Gupta has been made Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  • Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court P K Mohanty has been made ‘regular’ chief justice .

2. Thai contestant wins transgender beauty pageant

The 2016 winner of the world’s largest and most prestigious beauty pageant for transgender women has finally been crowned after the competition was postponed as the host country Thailand mourned the death of its monarch.

Thailand’s very own Jiratchaya Sirimongkolnawin was crowned Miss International Queen at the event in Pattya City, with Brazil’s Nathalie Oliveira and Venezuala’s Andrea Collazo finishing in second and third place respectively.

3. President of India inaugurates the 12th CII-Exim bank conclave on India Africa Project Partnership

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the 12th CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India Africa Project Partnership (March 9, 2017) in New Delhi.  The President said that India has supported development in Africa through Lines of Credit estimated at over US$7 billion under the IAFS process. Our collaboration extends across a wide spectrum. We have offered fifty thousand scholarships to our African brothers- six thousand Africans have since trained under IAFS-3.

4. Himachal launches mobile app ‘Mera Hunar HP’ for job-seeker

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has launched a mobile app to help skilled and semi-skilled workers find jobs. The mobile app and website titled ‘Mera Hunar HP’ or ‘My Talent’ will directly connect prospective employers with job aspirants as the latter’s resume will contain addresses and contact numbers.

5. RBI Restricts Cash Loan Against Gold by NBFC to Rs 25,000

The Reserve Bank of India has sharply brought down the threshold above which non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) can disburse loans against gold only by cheque. The central bank said with immediate effect such loans amounting to Rs. 20,000 and above can be disbursed only by cheque as against the earlier threshold of Rs. 1 lakh and above. This move is in line with the rules issued under the Income Tax Act.

6. Google acquires Kaggle for undisclosed amount to boost data play

Technology giant Google has announced the acquisition of Kaggle, a start-up that hosts a number of data scientists, for an undisclosed amount at the Cloud Next 2017 conference.Founded in 2010, Kaggle is home to the world’s largest community of data scientists and machine-learning enthusiasts.Kaggle and Google Cloud will continue to support machine learning training and deployment services while offering the community the ability to store and query large datasets

7. Paddleboarder makes world-first Atlantic crossing

A South African man Chris Bertish has become the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a stand-up paddleboard after completing an epic 4,050-mile voyage alone at sea. Chris Bertish pulled into Antigua, in the Leeward islands of the Caribbean after departing from Agadir, Morocco, 93 days ago. Bertish, 42, a big-wave surfer as well as a sailor, who won the renowned Mavericks surf contest in northern California in 2010, had contended with sharks, storms and loneliness on the adventure.

8. IBM Researchers Creates World’s Smallest Magnet to Store Single Bit Data

Imagine one day being able to carry vast libraries of data, currently stored in rooms full of servers, in your pocket. That’s the dream of a team of IBM scientists who have built what they say is the world’s smallest ever magnet, which uses a single atom to store information. Their proof of concept could one day lead to credit card-sized hard drives capable of holding the entire 35 million song iTunes library.

9. India test-fires Brahmos missile

India has successfully tested an extended range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile whose reach has been increased from 290 km to 400 km, from a test range along the Odisha coast. The cruise missile was test fired from a mobile launcher from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near Balasore. The missile is capable of carrying a warhead of 300 kg.

10. Sachin Tendulkar appointed as official ambassador of women’s World Cup 2017

The Inteational Cricket Council (ICC) appointed Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar as Ambassador for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017. The ICC Women’s World Cup kicks off from June 24 at England and Wales with eight cricketing nations going head-to-head for the prestigious trophy.

11. Chemistry Nobel winner George Olah passes away

George A. Olah, whose work won a Nobel Prize in chemistry and paved the way for more effective oil refining and ways of producing less polluting forms of gasoline, has died at age 89. Olah died at his Beverly Hills home, according to the University of Southern California’s Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute, of which he was the founding director.
