  1. IIT Kanpur to confer honorary doctorate on PT Usha

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will confer a doctorate on former sprint queen PT Usha, who missed a medal by a whisker at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

The degree, Doctor of Science (honoris causa – a degree awarded as a mark of esteem) will be conferred on June 16 to mark the 50th convocation of the prestigious institute of the country. This is her second doctorate – in 2002, Kannur University had conferred D.Lit on her.

  1. Indian girl bags Little Miss Universe Internet 2017

12 year old Padmalaya Nanda from Odisha has created history by becoming the youngest girl to bag the “Little Miss Universe Internet 2017” and “Little Miss Actress” crowns at the Little Miss Universe 2017 at port city of Batumi in Georgia.

Padmalaya Nanda, who studies in the 8th standard at a school in Cuttack, Odisha, bagged the crowns at the finale of the little Universe 2017, held at port city of Batumi in Georgia on June 4.

This is the first time that a 12 years Indian girl has won this beauty pageant title.

  1. Government Launches Tele-Law initiative

The government has launched the ‘Tele-Law’ initiative of the Ministry of Law and Justice partnered with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that anchors the Digital India programme, to provide legal aid services through its Common Service Centres (CSC) at the panchayat level, spread across the country.

According to the Law Ministry, in the first phase, the ‘Tele-Law’ scheme will be tested as a pilot across 500 such CSCs in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to understand the challenges and make necessary corrections to the scheme before it is scaled up and rolled out across the country in a phased manner.

  1. Arunachal wants Separate time zone to improve efficiency, work hours

The demand for a separate time zone for the northeastern states has a new champion in Arunachal   Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu.

The separate time zone was needed to improve work efficiency and save electricity in the region.

A study by Bengaluru-based National Institute of Advanced Studies claimed in a report that such a move could save up to 2.7 billion units of electricity. A planning commission report in 2006, too, suggested different time zones in India to improve efficiency.

  1. DRDO successfully test fires ‘Nag’ missile

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test-fired Anti-tank Guided Missile (ATGM) ‘Nag’ in a desert in the western sector of Rajasthan.

The “fire and forget” third generation anti-tank guided missile ‘Nag’ is equipped with the highly advanced Imaging Infrared Radar (IRR) seeker with integrated avionics, technology which is possessed by very few nations.

  1. India to be co-partner in global food trade fair ANUGA

India to be a co-partner in a global food and beverages trade ANUGA held in Cologne Germany from October 7-11 this year.

The 34th edition of ANUGA is being organised by Koelnmesse GmBH and 7,200 exhibitors from more than 100 countries are likely to participate in the event.

  1. Haryana frames new Ayush policy

Haryana has framed a new Ayush policy under which dispensaries and hospitals upto 20 beds would be opened in rural and urban areas of the state, Health minister Anil Vij said.

Under this, approval for opening of Ayush dispensary in a rural area having a population of 5,000 in a radius of 6 km would be provided, which would be opened at the places adjacent to villages.

  1. India emerges as 7th Largest exporter of Agri products globally – commerce Secretary

Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia said that while India has emerged as the seventh largest exporter of agri-products globally, opportunities in newer markets have to be searched for further growth.

Ms. Teaotia said Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) of the Ministry of Commerce in association with the concerned line Ministries is addressing issues relating to market access. She said it is important to maintain traceability and accountability in value addition chain.

  1. Nalanda model of water conservation chosen for National Award

A model of water conservation adopted successfully by the authorities in Nalanda district of south central Bihar, has been selected for the national award for excellence in the Mahatma Gandhi national rural employment guarantee programme (MGNREGP), by the ministry of rural development.

The award for excellence will be conferred on ‘Project Jal Sanchay’, the water conservation model developed in chief minister Nitish Kumar’s native district, at a function to be organised at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on June 19.

  1. School students from Lucknow to perform yoga at UN

A 72-member team of City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, will leave for the United States for a live performance at the United Nations Headquarters on June 21.

A group of school students from Lucknow are practicing to perform various asanas at the UN headquarters in New York.

Lucknow will be hosting the main event for the Yoga Day this year in which the PM and Yogi will participate along with 55,000 people.

  1. Hungary passes tough anti-foreign NGO law

Hungary’s parliament approved a crackdown on foreign-backed civil society groups despite an international outcry, in a move seen as targeting US billionaire George Soros. A new law, passed by 130 votes to 44, will force groups receiving more than 24,000 euros ($26,000) annually in overseas funding to register as a “foreign-supported organisation”, or risk closure for non-compliance.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.

Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

  1. Vietnam GM Nguyen bags Mumbai Mayor Chess title

Vietnam Grand Master Nguyen Duc Hoa clinched a decisive win against Indian GM Neelotpal Das in the 10th and concluding round to finish with 8.5 points and emerge champion of the 10th Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Open Chess Tournament

The champion went home richer with the top prize of Rs 3 lakhs, while top-ranked Tajikistan GM Farrukh Amonatov (ELO 2635) took home a cheque of Rs 2 lakhs by finishing runner-up.

Amonatov finished with 8 points following his triumph over Russian GM Deviatkin Andrei (2481) to claim the second spot.
