  1. Chandra Shekhar Azad’s 86th Martyrdom Day observed

Chandra Shekhar Azad’s 86th Martyrdom Day observed on 27th February. Chandra Shekhar Azad, the mere name that could make a British policeman during the British Raj era break into cold sweat.He was born on 23 July 1906, in Bhavra, Alirajpur. He died on 27 February 1931 at Allahabad. He lived for mere 24 years, but made a world of difference to India’s freedom struggle.When he died, freedom for his beloved nation was nowhere in immediate sight. But he created huge dents in the colonizers’ morale and inspired the generations to come.

  1. 606th foundation day celebrated by Ahmedabad

Manek Burj is the place from where Ahmed Shah Badshah began the construction of Ahmedabad on February 26, 1411, as capital of his Gujarat Sultanate. It is the place where the foundation stone was laid under the guidance of Manek Nath, one of the 84 siddha gurus of Nath Sampradaya.

In a departure from tradition, rituals to celebrate Ahmedabad’s 606th foundation day started from Manek Nath Samadhi, located in the heart of walled city and also commercial hub Manek Chowk. Earlier, the annual rituals used to begin from Manek Burj near Ellis Bridge.

  1. Rajasthan Inaugurates Medical Project RAHAT for Prompt Treatment of Heart Disease

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje  inaugurated a medical project Rajasthan Heart Attack Treatment programme (RAHAT) at the Eternal Heart Care Center Hospital in Jaipur. She also flagged off an ambulance fitted with equipment and trained paramedical staff required for treatment of heart disease. RAHAT programme aims to provide people in remote and rural areas with timely treatment during heart attacks.

  1. Mumbai richest Indian city with total wealth of $820 bn

India’s financial capital Mumbai, which is home to 46,000 millionaires and 28 billionaires, is the richest Indian city with a total wealth of $820 billion.  According to New World Wealth, Mumbai is the richest city in the country followed by Delhi and Bengaluru in the second and third place, respectively.

Delhi is home to 23,000 millionaires and 18 billionaires with a total wealth of $450 billion, while Bengaluru with a total wealth of $320 billion houses 7,700 millionaires and eight billionaires.

  1. Paytm Mall’ a new shopping platform launched by Paytm

Paytm is now expanding its reach in the e-commerce segment. While the Paytm app itself offered a bunch of booking, buying and renting facilities, the company has now launched a dedicated app and website, Paytm Mall, for the online marketplace business. Presently, the app is only available on Android, but is expected to be launched on iOS soon. Paytm Mall, the company aims to offer a unique combination of the Mall and Bazaar concepts to Indian consumers.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced it had become one of the top three most-valuable brands in the information technology (IT) service sector. The company was assessed by Brand Finance, the leading brand valuation firm in the world. The TCS brand had achieved a major milestone, emerging as one of the big four brands in the IT services sector.

  1. World’s first 5G-suppourting smartphone launched by ZTE

Chinese telecoms giant ZTE unveiled the world’s first smartphone compatible with the lightening-fast 5G mobile internet service that networks expect to have up and running by 2020.The company said the Gigabit Phone is the first smartphone capable of download speeds reaching up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps)—up to 10 times faster than the first generation of 4G services widely

  1. Robotic spacecraft to reach Sun planned by NASA

NASA plans to send its first robotic spacecraft to the Sun next year that is slated to get within six million kilometres of the blazing star to probe its atmosphere.First, the mission will hopefully unveil why the surface of the Sun, called the photosphere, is not as hot as its atmosphere, called the corona.According to NASA, the surface temperature of the Sun is only about 5,500 degrees Celsius. However, the atmosphere above it is a sizzling two million degrees Celsius.

  1. SoftBank, Foxconn form joint venture to expand investments

Japan’s SoftBank Group and Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Co. Ltd will soon begin operating a joint venture that deepens ties between two of Asia’s biggest technology companies. The move will give Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., a 54.5% stake in one of SoftBank’s existing subsidiaries for $600 million and comes as both groups step up investments in the technology sector and consider expansion in the US.

  1. John-John Dohmen, Naomi Van named best Hockey Players of 2016

Olympic silver medallist John-John Dohmen of Belgium and retiring Netherlands star Naomi Van As were named the male and female Players of the Year for 2016, respectively, by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Britain’s Olympic gold medallist Maddie Hinch was adjudged the female Goalkeeper of the Year while David Harte of Ireland was crowned the best goalkeeper in the world for the second year in a row among the men.

  1. ISSF World Cup 2017: 10m pistol mixed India won Gold medal

India’s ace shooters Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu gave India its second medal in the ongoing ISSF World Cup by clinching gold in 10m pistol mixed team event at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range. Jitu and Heena defeated Japan’s Yukari Konishi and Tomoyuki Matsuda 5-3 in the final. Slovenia’s Naphaswan Yangpaiboon and Kevin Venta were placed third.

Pooja Ghatkar won the women’s 10m air rifle bronze to give India its first medal in the competition. The 28-year-old Ghatkar, a former Asian champion, shot 228.8 in the final of 10m air rifle to finish third on the podium and win her maiden World Cup medal.

  1. Hockey India League 2017 won by Kalinga Lancers

Dabang Mumbai entered the finals of the fifth edition of Hockey India League by winning their semi-final match against Delhi Waveriders and will now face Kalinga Lancers in the final. Table toppers Dabang Mumbai, led by their skipper Florian Fuchs, rode on a 26th minute field goal by Dutch import Robbert Kemperman to beat Delhi Waveriders 2-0 and reach the summit clash.

  1. World record set by Hyderabad girl for playing marathon carrom

Sixteen-year-old Husna Sameera made the city proud by setting a Guinness world record for playing carrom for 34 hours 45 minutes and 56 seconds at a stretch. The game was played at DRRMC Indoor Stadium in Vijayawada on December 26-27 last year. However, she received a certificate and a letter of appreciation from the recording agency earlier this week. The carrom game was officially recorded and coordinated by Guinness Book of Records observer, Squadron Leader Jayasimha.

  1. Gopi, Athare win men’s and women’s races in Delhi Marathon

Rio Olympian Thanackal Gopi won the men’s title in the second edition of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon held on 26 February 2017. Monika Athare claimed the honors in the women’s section.

In Men’s full marathon, Gopi clocked 2 hours, 15 minutes and 37 seconds to win the race in his first appearance in the event. Gopi, who is from Army Sports Institute in Pune, has already qualified for the World Athletics Championships to be held in London in August.

In women’s full marathon, Monika Athare from Nashik completed the race in 2 hours, 39 minutes and 08 seconds, to bag her maiden title at this distance. She also qualified for the World Championships breaching the entry standard. Athare was followed by Jyoti Gawate in the second position, while Ranjan Kumari finishes third.
