  1. Malala Yousafzai becomes honorary Canadian citizen

Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai became only the sixth person to receive honorary Canadian citizenship, before advocating in a speech to parliament for women and girls’ education — a cause dear to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. At age 19, Yousafzai is the youngest person to speak to Canadian members of parliament and senators in a joint session.

  1. BHIM-Aadhaar app to allow payment using fingerprint launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched BHIM-Aadhar pay app that will allow people to make payments without using a smartphone. Instead, the app will enable payments through the fingerprint scanner, by authenticating the biometric details of a user with Aadhaar database.

The app, which will be available for download to merchants across the country, will link your Aadhaar number and biometric fingerprint to complete a transaction. This will not only make cashless payment more prevalent but also possibly more easy and hassle-free. To enable the transactions through BHIM-Aadhar, merchants will have to purchase fingerprint scanners.

  1. President Pranab Mukherjee clears all four GST bills

President Pranab Mukherjee has gave his nod to the four supporting legislations related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill after it was passed by both the House of Parliament during the budget session. GST was passed with four supporting amendments by the Rajya Sabha on April 6 without any amendments. The four draft bills – the central GST Bill, the integrated GST Bill, the Union territory GST Bill and the GST (Compensation to states) Bill – were cleared by the Rajya Sabha.

  1. Nation Pays Homage to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar on his 127th Birth Anniversary

The President, Shri Pranab Mukherji led the nation in paying homage to Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his 127th Birth anniversary. He paid floral tributes at the statue of Baba Saheb at Parliament House Lawns in the Parliament House complex in the morning. The Vice President, Shri M. Hamid Ansari, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Shri Thaawarchand Ghelot, Ministers of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar and Shri Vijay Sampla and leaders of various political parties paid tributes to Dr. Ambedkar at the statue of Baba Saheb at Parliament House Lawns.

  1. MoU Signed Between NSFDC & Development Commissioner (Handlooms)

The CMD, National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC) under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under Ministry of Textiles signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment and Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister of Textile.  The objective of signing this MoU is to help Scheduled Caste weavers and their families by promoting production and marketing of high value quality Handlooms products at Block level Cluster in various States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha etc.

  1. Andhra CM lays foundation stone for ₹100-crore Ambedkar park

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has  laid the foundation-stone for the Rs 100 crore Dr B R Ambedkar Smriti Vanam (memorial park) at Inavolu village, marking the 125th birth anniversary of the architect of Indian Constitution.  He also laid the foundation-stone for a 126-ft statue of Ambedkar that will come up in the park, spread over a 20-acre site. The Smriti Vanam will have a multi-purpose Convention Hall with a seating capacity of 3,000 persons.

  1. PM launches GNFC’s cashless/less cash township model across 12 States

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched in Nagpur a cashless/less cash township model, developed by Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC), across 81 townships in 12 States. These townships will deliver 2.5 lakh cashless transactions per day, translating into 9 crore transactions in a year. GNFC’s township at Bharuch in Gujarat became India’s first complete cashless township after demonetisation announced by the PM on November 8, 2016.

  1. Jharkhand police launch Tare Zameen Par project for poor kids

With a motive to enlighten children in naxal-affected areas of Jharkhand’s Palamau district, Jharkhand Police has initiated Tare Zameen Par program to encourage children to lead happy lives. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Vipul Shukla appealed to locals to donate bags, shoes, books and clothes that would be distributed among poor children. People from all sections of society took part in the program held in Jharkhand’s Daltongunj city, contributing basic amenities for children.

  1. BRICS bank plans to issue rupee, yuan bonds this year: KV Kamath

The New Development Bank (NDB) set up by the BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa  plans to issue bonds this year in Indian rupee and Chinese yuan, its president KV Kamath said. The bank sold its first three billion yuan ($437 million) yuan-denominated bonds in China last year in July to fund clean energy projects in member-states.

  1. NASA reveals new insights on ‘Ocean Worlds’ in Solar System

NASA announced that the icy moon of Saturn, Enceladus, holds a “food source” for potential life.  Not only that, but it’s believed that Jupiter’s moon Europa — another icy world is also spewing water vapour into space. Though Earth is thought of as having the most abundant water in our neighbourhood, recent research has found that some moons could contain their own oceans, hidden beneath their icy crusts. Enceladus holds the most water in our solar system.
